Set Up
Whenever I do crafts like this with my three year old, I always like to make one myself before hand just so that she can see what it is that we are about to make. So read these instructions quickly first, make one of your own so that you can assist your little one!
The only prep for this activity is cutting out noses and mouths for the pumpkin faces using the black construction paper. I cut out triangle noses and different shaped mouths.
I used a big sheet of craft paper spread on the table as the paper for our pumpkins, but if you are doing this with your class or want to keep it for display using a sheet (or sheets) of white paper will work better.
Making the Pumpkin Face
We first used a paint brush to paint the back of the spatula orange. I then showed her how to use it as a stamp to stamp the pumpkin face.
Sticky Spatula
The spatula will be a little sticky on the paper so I showed her the best way to unstick it without smudging the paint. We did this by lifting the spatula up in a forward motion.
Making the Pumpkin Stem
Next came the stem. Using another paint brush, I had her paint a plastic knife green.
Then she used it to stamp a stem on the top of the pumpkin.
Making the Pumpkin Face
Next, she stuck googly eyes on the pumpkin as well as a nose and mouth.
We did this while the paint was still wet so there was no need for glue.
And voila! You have a super easy to make but oh so adorable spatula pumpkin faces!
