Penguin crafts are always a hit, but this Sponge Penguin Craft takes it up a notch with its unique painting technique. My kids loved dipping sponges into paint and stamping their penguins onto the page—it was messy in the best way! Watching their little flock of penguins come together was so much fun, and the snowy finish added the perfect wintry touch.
This craft is simple, creative, and perfect for a cozy day at home. It’s easy enough for younger kids to enjoy but still leaves room for older ones to get creative with their designs. Plus, the sponge stamping technique adds a playful texture that makes each penguin unique.
Why You’ll Love This Penguin Craft
This craft is hands-on, tactile, and super engaging for kids. The sponge painting technique is easy to do, and the final result is a page full of adorable penguins. It’s also a great way to practice fine motor skills, from stamping with the sponge to gluing on the penguin features.

Materials You’ll Need:
- Cardstock
- Black and white pain
- Paper plate for paint
- Sponge
- Scissors
- Orange and white construction paper
- Pom-pom (for painting snow)
- Black marker
How to Make the Sponge Penguin Craft
- Prepare the Sponges
Cut out a circle from the sponge for the penguin’s body. Cut out an elongated oval from the sponge for the wings.

- Stamp the Penguins
Pour black paint onto a paper plate. Dip the circle sponge into the paint and stamp it onto the cardstock to create the penguin bodies. Make as many as you can fit on the page. Dip the oval sponge into the black paint and stamp two wings beside each penguin body.

- Add the Penguin Features
Cut out bellies from white construction paper and glue one to each penguin. Then cut out feet and beaks from orange construction paper and glue them on. Cut out white circles for the eyes, draw pupils with a black marker, and attach them above the beak.

- Create the Snowy Background
Pour white paint onto a paper plate. Dip a pom-pom into the white paint and stamp it around the penguins to create falling snow.

This Sponge Penguin Craft is a fun and creative way to spend an afternoon with your kids. From the stamping to the gluing, every step is engaging and mess-friendly. The end result? A flock of adorable penguins surrounded by snowy magic—perfect for displaying or gifting during the winter season!
