This is a great fine motor sorting activity that will put your change bowl to good use as well as introduce coins to your toddler or preschooler.

Introducing Coins

My preschooler has recently become very interested in coins. We use them often as rewards instead of stickers or treats so she was over the moon with the idea of an activity using coins.

Preschoolers will already be familiar with coins from everyday life. So in this activity I started to introduce the names and amounts of the coins. I focused on their size and the pictures on the coins to help her differentiate between them. I wasn’t to fussed if she didn’t understand or remember what amounts they represent- that will come later.

Here’s what you’ll need to get started with your Sticky Coin Wall.

Supplies

Con-Tact Paper or sticky paper
Coins (you should have lots of each different type of coin used)
Painter’s Tape

Set Up

Sticky Wall

Using the painter’s tape, tape a large piece of contact paper to the wall, sticky side facing out. Then use the tape to create different sections. We sorted through $2.00, $1.00, $0.25, $0.10 and $0.05 coins, so I created five different equal sized sections.

I then stuck one of each type of coin in each section of the sticky wall so that she knew where each coin was going. Then put all the rest in a bowl.

Fun Canadian Fact

A fun Canadian fact (yup I’m Canadian!), we don’t have pennies anymore. They were phased out a few years ago but we do have a dollar and two dollar coins. So coin sorting Canadian money is lots of fun!

Trouble shooting

If you are doing this activity with $1 or $2 coins or larger coins make sure you get your toddler or preschooler to press the coin firmly on the sticky paper, that way it will stick and not fall!
