INSIDE: Washi Tape Sesame Street character craft is a fun and creative activity for toddlers and preschoolers. It uses two of my favourite crafting supplies – washi tape and watercolours!

Washi Tape and Watercolours

I love using washi tape and watercolours together. They always make such beautiful art. They are great for using with toddlers and preschoolers. Washi tape is colorful and fun and easily comes off furniture. Watercolours are not as messy as regular paint but still provides vibrant colour. When you combine the two the results are always lovely.

For this craft we will be making Elmo, Oscar and Cookie Monster.

How to Make Washi Tape Sesame Street Characters

  1. Cut short pieces of washi tape and stick them to a table. To help your toddler or preschooler only place the correct colour of washi tape on their plate only cut and display one colour at a time. I did this with two toddlers and each toddler did a different character so I placed all the blue washi tape on one side and all the red on the other side and instructed my toddlers to only use their colour to make their character.
  2. Invite your toddler or preschooler to cover their white paper plate with the washi tape. Cover one plate with the red washi tape, another with the blue washi tape and another with the green washi tape.
  3. Use watercolour paints and brushes to fill in all the white spaces.
  4. Cut out six (6) large white circles and smaller black circles; three (3) large black smiles; an orange nose for Elmo and brown eyebrows for Oscar out of the construction paper.
  5. Glue the eyes and mouth to your characters and the orange nose on Elmo and the brown eyebrows on Oscar.
