How to Make Yarn Wrapped Hearts Craft – Valentines Day Crafts

Adult Prep

Here’s what you need to prepare before hand so your preschooler or kindergartner can make this craft largely on their own. preschoolers may need assistance with this idea.

For this idea, you can make two different types of yarn wrapped hearts. The first is a heart with the middle cut out or and the second is a whole heart.

For the Whole Hearts

  1. On a piece of cardboard draw the shape of a heart using a pencil. You can draw it free hand or use a heart shaped cookie cutter.
  2. Cut it out using scissors.
  3. Cut a slit at the top. This is where you can slide the yarn through to start wrapping.

For Cut out Hearts

  1. On a piece of cardboard draw the shape of a heart using a pencil.
  2. Cut it out using scissors.
  3. Draw the shape of another heart inside it. Make a single cut in order to reach the heart on the inside and cut it out. Be careful to keep the border heart in tact.
  4. Once you have cut out the outline of the heart, tape up the cut opening.

Make a Whole Yarn Wrapped Heart

  1. Slide the end of the yarn through the slit at the top of the heart. Secure with a piece of tape.
  2. Wrap yarn all around the heart until its completely covered in yarn and you can’t see the cardboard anymore.
  3. Secure the end of the yarn inside the heart by threading it around a strand and tying a knot. (Adult assistance required)

Make a Cut Out Yarn Wrapped Heart

  1. Secure the end of the yarn on the heart using tape. You can close the opening in the heart with tape or a stapler (this can be done before or after you start wrapping)
  2. Wrap yarn all around the heart until its completely covered in yarn and you can’t see the cardboard anymore.
  3. Secure the end by tying a knot around the heart.

Turn Yarn Wrapped Hearts into a Valentines Gift, Card or Decoration

You can turn your yarn wrapped hearts into a gift, card or Valentines decoration. Create more than one yarn wrapped heart and attach them together using another piece of yarn. Include a piece at the very top for hanging as a Valentines decoration.

To make this into a card, create your yarn wrapped heart and then fold a piece of card stock in half. Use a hot glue gun to glue the heart to the front of the card. Write a nice message underneath the heart or inside the card.

TV Show: Curious Crafting

I’m so excited to finally share my new crafting TV show Curious Crafting which launched July 1 at on TVOkids and TVOkids YouTube!

Set in the ultimate crafting space, Curious Crafting is a short form pre-school age series about the joy of making crafts. I lead a rotating cast of adorable little preschoolers (including my own) making magic out of common household objects.

In each episode we transform recycled items into magical crafts like a milk carton school bus, paper bag puppet or cotton pad turtle. The crafters learn and laugh their way through each activity while demonstrating what their young imaginations can create.

Curious Crafting shares the adventure and joy of making art with takeaway lessons for creating crafts at home.

This show designed for toddlers and preschoolers 2.5 years old and up.
