Spring is the perfect season to embrace all things new, vibrant, and lively, making it an ideal time to introduce the Hopping Bunny Craft to your crafting session. This craft is not only a fun way to get into the spring spirit, but it also brings a touch of whimsy to your home. Bunnies, synonymous with spring and Easter, are loved by children for their soft fur and playful nature. This craft allows little ones to create their own little bunny that can actually hop! It’s a simple project that combines creativity with a bit of mechanics, providing a wonderful opportunity for children to engage in hands-on learning while having fun.

Materials

  • White Paper cups
  • Pipe cleaners
  • Yarn
  • Card stock
  • Rubber bands
  • Scissors
  • Permanent marker or pen
  • Glue
  • sharpies, colouring pencils, pastel crayons, markers
  • watercolour paint/tempera watercolour cakes, water in a bowl, paint brush

How to Make a Hopping Bunny Craft

  1. Paint two white paper cups in your desired colors. Cut out ears from white card stock and paint them as well. Set them aside to dry.
  2. Next, decorate one of the cup as the bunny by adding a dot sticker nose and drawing on a mouth using a black marker. Also glue on google eyes and add eye lashes and eye brows if desired!
  3. Once the bunny ears are dry, glue on pink felt inner ears. Glue them on to the back of the bunny.
  1. On the bunny cup, make 4 cuts at the bottle or the opening of the cup across from each other.
  2. Cut two elastic bands. Tie a knot at each end of the elastic bands.
  3. Slide one end the elastic bands down one the slits in the cup and the other end across from it. Repeat with the second elastic band so that the two bands are crossing to create an ‘X’.
  1. Final touches. Glue on a large Pom Pom on the back of the bunny for a tail. Cut a pipe cleaner in half. Use a pencil to poke one or two holes on either side of the nose and slide one of the pipe cleaner in for whiskers. Add some hair by cutting off a bunch of yarn and gluing it to the top of the bunny’s head.
  1. Place the bunny cup on top of the second and cup press it down by holding the bottom edges. Release the cup and watch it hop up into the air!

Tips for Success:

  • Ensure the paint is completely dry before moving on to attaching the popsicle sticks and rubber bands to prevent smudging.
  • Experiment with the placement and tension of the rubber band to get the best hop for your bunny.

Skills Learned:

Fine Motor Skills: From painting to assembling the hopping mechanism, this craft offers various ways to develop fine motor skills and hand-eye coordination.

Creativity and Imagination: Decorating their bunnies allows children to express their creativity, making each bunny unique to its creator.

Understanding Basic Physics: The simple mechanism behind making the bunny hop introduces children to basic concepts of physics, like force and motion, in a very tangible way.

Problem-Solving: Adjusting the rubber band to make the bunny hop effectively encourages children to think critically and solve problems through trial and error.

The Hopping Bunny Craft is an excellent way to combine creative fun with educational value, making it a perfect activity for spring. It’s a reminder that learning can happen anywhere and that the best kind of education is one that feels like play. So grab your crafting supplies, and let’s make some bunnies hop!

TV Show: Curious Crafting

I’m so excited to share my crafting TV show Curious Crafting which launched in July 2022 on TVOkids and TVOkids YouTube! Season 2 aired in August 2023! My show was also nominated in 2023 for Best Live Action Preschool Series by the Youth Media Alliance Awards of Excellence.

Curious Crafting Season 1 is also now airing in Australia on ABC! Watch it here!

Set in the ultimate crafting space, Curious Crafting is a short form pre-school age series about the joy of making crafts. I lead a rotating cast of adorable little preschoolers (including my own) making magic out of common household objects.

In each episode we transform recycled items into magical crafts like a milk carton school bus, paper bag puppet or cotton pad turtle. The crafters learn and laugh their way through each activity while demonstrating what their young imaginations can create.

Curious Crafting shares the adventure and joy of making art with takeaway lessons for creating crafts at home.

This show designed for toddlers and preschoolers 2.5 years old and up.
