One of my favorite things about fall is how colorful everything gets. Leaves, pumpkins, apples—everywhere you look it feels like nature has turned into a giant art project. That’s exactly why paint-splat crafts are such a fun way to celebrate the season. They’re simple, eye-catching, and perfect for preschoolers, toddlers, and even bigger kids who want to get creative.

The basic idea behind paint splatting is easy: fold a piece of paper with paint inside, press down, open it up, and reveal the surprise design! Each one turns out totally unique, which is part of the fun. And when you combine the technique with my fall templates (which you can grab for free below), you get crafts that are not only fun to make but also double as seasonal decorations.

Tips for Keeping the Mess Down

Now let’s be honest—paint-splat crafts can get a little messy. But with a few tricks, cleanup is way easier:

  • Use a tray or cookie sheet – It keeps paint from running off the sides onto your table.
  • Don’t overdo the paint – Just a few squirts go a long way. Too much paint and it oozes everywhere (though kids think that’s hilarious).
  • Use thicker paper if possible – Cardstock or construction paper works best, but I’ve used regular printer paper and it worked just fine.
  • Smocks or old clothes – Because even with the neatest setup, kids are kids!

Paint Splat Fall Crafts

1. Fall Tree Paint Splat Craft

Nothing says autumn like a colorful fall tree. Kids squeeze paint into the branches, fold the paper, and reveal a tree full of splattered leaves in red, yellow, and orange.

2. Pumpkin Paint Splat Craft

This one’s always a favorite. The orange splats spread out into a perfect pumpkin shape, and kids can add a green stem and even a silly face when it’s dry.

3. Turkey Paint Splat Craft

A turkey template makes the cutest Thanksgiving decoration. The splats become vibrant feathers, and kids can glue on googly eyes and a paper beak to finish it off.

4. Corn Paint Splat Craft

Use yellow and green paint to make an ear of corn with husks. The splattered effect looks just like kernels, and it’s a fun way to sneak in a little farm-themed learning.

5. Acorn Paint Splat Craft

Acorns are a fall must-have, and paint-splatting makes them look extra textured. Kids can use brown shades for the nut and darker tones for the cap, then add a smiley face for fun.

6. Butterfly Paint Splat Craft

Even though butterflies aren’t just a fall thing, they look amazing in autumn colors. The symmetrical paint splats create wings that are always different and always beautiful.

7. Candy Corn Paint Splat Craft

Layer yellow, orange, and white paint for a sweet candy corn craft. The paint-splat technique makes it look swirly and unique, and kids love the idea of making candy with paint.

8. Sunflower Paint Splat Craft

With brown centers and golden yellow petals, paint splats make gorgeous sunflowers. Add green stems with a paintbrush or marker to complete the picture.

9. Paper Plate Apple Paint Splat Craft

Cut a paper plate into an apple shape, then add red paint inside for the splat. Kids can glue on a green leaf, and you’ve got a bright fall apple that’s perfect for a classroom bulletin board.

10. Paper Plate Pumpkin Paint Splat Craft

Similar to the apple, but this time with orange paint for a pumpkin. Kids can add a little brown stem and green leaves once it’s dry—adorable and super easy.

Fall is the perfect season for paint splat crafts. The colors are vibrant, the shapes are fun, and kids love the big reveal when they open up their folded paper. With just a little prep (and a tray to keep things contained), you’ll have an afternoon full of art that doubles as seasonal décor.

So grab your paints, print out the free templates, and let your little ones create a whole collection of fall paint-splat masterpieces. Each one will be unique, just like the kids who make them!
