How to Set Up Frisbee Bowling

I first did bowling with my kids for Yes Day. I set up a glow in the dark bowling activity indoors and it was a huge hit. So I decided that we should take the fun outside this summer and try bowling with a frisbee.

Although my 3 year olds gave this activity a try, they really had a more difficult time knocking the pins down. If you are doing this activity with a child younger than 4 try using a larger frisbee so that they have an easier time. I also let my three year olds toss the frisbee from much closer than I did my almost 7 year old.

For pins I used dollar store pins that I had in our outdoor toy box. But if you don’t have pins you can easily use soda pop bottles or water bottles. Fill them with a very small amount of water to help stabilize them.

To set up the pins you can set them up the same as in regular bowling or space them out a little more for a greater challenge. You can also move player closers or further away from the pins according to their ability.

The goal of the game is the same as in regular bowling: knock down all the pins. The scoring is also the same.

How they Played

This was a lot of fun for my 6 year old. I played against her and she got pretty competitive! A great way to play in the backyard!

So I got in on the game as well. I always walk a balance when playing with them and try to let them take the lead. I let them take charge in the conversation. The sharks chased the scuba divers, who were searching for sunken treasure. The mermaids helped the divers as well as other sea creatures the sharks were trying to eat.

Extension

Connect this game to a learning goal. Space the pins out and place a sight word, math problem or letter or number on them using a post it note and invite your little one to read or answer or identify the work, problem or letter before trying to knock it down.

Age Suitability

This activity is good for kids 4 years and up. My kids are 3, 3, and 6 year old.
