How to Make a Tape Christmas Tree

  1. Grab your painters tape and start by placing a small rolled up piece at the top of where you want your tree to start. Make sure it’s not too tall for your child. Place another piece at the bottom.
  2. Stretch out a long piece of tape and stick it, with the sticky side facing out, on the two tape rolls.
  3. Continue adding ‘strands’ to your Christmas tree, with the top strands emerging from the one point on top and then spreading out in the shape of a triangle.
  4. Cut out a star from yellow or gold foam or construction paper and stick it at the very top of your tree where the tape converges.

How to Play

Place your pom poms (big or small) into a basket or bowl and invite your toddler or preschooler to stick the pom poms on the tape Christmas tree.

For toddlers, they can stick them how ever they choose. You can model language for them by narrating what they are doing.

  • “You are sticking on the big yellow Pom Pom, oh and now you grabbed the small green Pom Pom to put it beside the yellow one.

For preschoolers, you can do the same and/or have them create simple patterns with the pom poms. First you start the pattern and invite them to finish it off. Or have them create a pattern and you continue it.

Extending the Activity

Here are a few ways to extend this activity:

  1. Once they are done have them remove only certain coloured pom poms. Shout out a colour and they have to race to see how many of that colour they can remove in 10 seconds. This can get messy and your tape tree many come down if they get too excited.
  2. Create tape presents (squares made from painters tape) that they have to decorate with Pom Poms.

Set in the ultimate crafting space, Curious Crafting is a short form pre-school age series about the joy of making crafts. I lead a rotating cast of adorable little preschoolers (including my own) making magic out of common household objects.

In each episode we transform recycled items into magical crafts like a milk carton school bus, paper bag puppet or cotton pad turtle. The crafters learn and laugh their way through each activity while demonstrating what their young imaginations can create.

Curious Crafting shares the adventure and joy of making art with takeaway lessons for creating crafts at home.
