Sometimes the best summer activities aren’t the ones that take hours to set up.
They’re the ones that make kids immediately stop what they’re doing, run across the yard, and start playing before you’ve even finished setting them up.
That’s exactly what happened when we made these Pool Noodle Tunnels.
With just a few pool noodles and five minutes of setup, our backyard transformed into an obstacle course, soccer field, race track, and imaginative play zone all at once. Kids crawled through them, ran around them, kicked balls through them, and invented games I never would have thought of myself.
If you’re looking for an easy outdoor activity that encourages movement, creativity, and independent play, this is the summer activity you didn’t know you needed.
Why You’ll Love Pool Noodle Tunnels
- Takes less than 5 minutes to set up
- Uses inexpensive pool noodles
- Encourages active outdoor play
- Works for toddlers, preschoolers, and older kids
- Can be used for dozens of different games
- Helps burn off energy without screens
- Easy to store when you’re done
This is one of those activities that looks almost too simple to be exciting. Then suddenly your kids are still playing with it an hour later.
Materials
- Pool noodles
- Wooden dowels
- Soccer ball, playground ball, or foam ball (optional)
How to Set Up Pool Noodle Tunnels
- Insert one wooden dowel into the grass and slide one end of the pool noodle on to it. Place pool noodles into an arch shape and place another dowel in the ground close by and slide the other end of the pool noodle down over the dowel.

- Continue with other noodles across your lawn.
- Create a line of tunnels, stagger them in a zig-zag pattern, or spread them around the yard to create different challenges.
- That’s it. Seriously. Once they’re set up, step back and watch the ideas start flowing.

Ways Kids Can Play
1. Crawl Through the Tunnels
Toddlers especially love crawling through the arches. It becomes an instant obstacle course that builds coordination, balance, and body awareness.

2. Soccer Tunnel Challenge
Set up several tunnels in a row and challenge kids to kick a ball through each one. You can assign point values to different tunnels or create a race against the clock.
3. Follow the Path
Arrange the tunnels in winding patterns around the yard and encourage kids to move through them while hopping, skipping, tiptoeing, or crab walking.
4. Color Challenges
Call out a color and have children race to that tunnel. This is a simple way to reinforce color recognition while keeping kids moving.
5. Animal Movement Course
Have kids move through the tunnels like different animals:
- Bear walk
- Frog jump
- Bunny hop
- Crab walk
- Caterpillar crawl
The sillier the better.
6. Create a Backyard Race
Combine tunnels with cones, hula hoops, jump ropes, or chalk paths to create a larger obstacle course.
Tip for Success
If you have the yard space, leave the tunnels up for a few days. Many of the best games happen after kids have had time to invent their own ways to play.
