Stick Kitten Craft

This Stick Kitten Craft is a simple nature craft that turns sticks and a few basic craft supplies into a cute kitten. Kids can collect the sticks outside, then bring them indoors to assemble their cat.

This is a fun cat craft for kids to make at home, at school, or as part of a nature-themed activity. Each kitten will look a little different depending on the sticks you find, so kids can get creative with their designs.

Supplies for the Stick Kitten Craft

You will need:

• A bunch of sticks that are approximately the same height
• 6-10 small, thin sticks
• 1 odd-shaped or curved twig for the tail
• Twine
• Glue or a hot glue gun
• Pink foam or felt
• Brown foam or felt
• Black foam or felt
• White foam or felt

How to Make a Stick Kitten

1. Start by collecting a bunch of sticks that are similar in height. They don’t need to match perfectly. Small differences in size and shape will give the kitten more character.
2. Lay the sticks side by side until you have a rectangle that will become the kitten’s body. Cut two pieces of twine and wrap them around the sticks near the top and bottom. Tie the twine tightly to help hold the sticks together. Add glue between or across the sticks if you need extra support.

3. Next, make the kitten’s face. Cut two triangular ears from brown foam or felt. Cut two smaller triangles from pink foam or felt and glue them inside the brown ears. Attach the finished ears to the top of the sticks.
4. Cut two eyes from white foam or felt and add smaller black pieces for the pupils. Glue the eyes onto the kitten.
5. Cut a small triangle from the pink foam or felt for the nose. Glue it underneath the eyes.
6. Use the six small twigs to make the kitten’s whiskers. Place three on each side of the nose and glue them securely to the sticks.
7. Finally, choose an odd-shaped or slightly curved twig for the kitten’s tail. Glue it to the back or side of the stick body so that it extends outward.

Let all of the glue dry completely before picking up or displaying your finished twig kitten craft.

Make Your Kitten Your Own

Kids can change the colors and features to create different cats. Try making green or blue eyes, different-shaped ears, or a longer tail.

You can also make several twig kittens in different sizes to create a whole cat family. If kids have a pet cat, they can try choosing colors and features that look like their own pet.

Tips for Making a Twig Kitten Craft

Choose dry sticks rather than damp or freshly fallen ones. Brush away loose dirt and allow the sticks to dry completely before crafting.

Try to find sticks with similar thicknesses. This will make it easier to arrange them into the kitten’s body.

An adult should handle a hot glue gun, especially when attaching the heavier sticks and tail. Regular craft glue can be used with younger kids, but it may require a longer drying time.

Lay out the kitten’s face before gluing anything down. Kids can move the eyes, nose, ears, and whiskers around until they like how their kitten looks.

Don’t worry about finding perfectly straight sticks. Crooked, bumpy, and uneven twigs are part of what makes this nature craft for kids fun and unique.

This easy Twig Kitten Craft is a good way to combine outdoor exploring with an indoor art activity. Kids get to collect natural materials, work with different textures, and create a kitten they can display when they’re finished.
