Create a thoughtful symbol of remembrance with this printable poppy wreath craft. Using our free poppy template, preschoolers and kindergartners can color, cut, and arrange their flowers into a wreath to display at home or in the classroom.

This simple activity offers an opportunity to talk about Remembrance Day, honour those who served, and reflect on the importance of peace.

What You’ll Need

  • Free poppies printable
  • White paper or cardstock
  • A paper plate or cardboard ring
  • Green paint
  • Paint brush
  • Scissors
  • Glue
  • Ribbon or string for hanging (optional)

How to Make Your Remembrance Day Wreath

1. Print your poppies

Print at least copies of my mini poppies template to cover your wreath base. Cardstock makes sturdier flowers, but regular printer paper works well too. You can print the black and white version or the color versions.

2. Prepare the wreath base

Cut the centre out of a paper plate, leaving an outer ring. You can also make a ring from sturdy cardboard. Have an adult help with this step. Paint it green using washable green paint and a paint brush. Set it aside to dry.

3. Cut or Colour the flowers

If you printed out the black and white poppies, invite children to color the poppy petals red and the centres black. Take your time with this step, allowing space for conversation as they work.

4. Cut out the poppies

If you printed out the colored versions, skip step 2 and carefully cut around each flower. Younger children may need an adult to prepare the poppies or help with cutting.

5. Arrange and glue

Place the poppies around the ring before gluing them down. Overlap the petals slightly to create a full wreath, then press each flower gently into place.

6. Add a hanging loop

Once the glue is dry, attach ribbon or string to the back and hang your wreath somewhere it can be seen and appreciated.

A Moment to Remember

While making the wreath, explain that poppies are worn on Remembrance Day to remember those who served and those who died in war.

You might ask:

  • How can we show that we remember someone?
  • What does a peaceful world look like?
  • How can we bring kindness into our day?

Keep the conversation gentle and appropriate for the children’s ages, giving them room to ask their own questions.

Make a Classroom Remembrance Wreath

For a shared project, invite each child to colour one poppy and add it to a large cardboard wreath. Display the finished piece around a small sign that reads “We Remember.”

Children can also write a word about peace or kindness on a paper leaf to place among the flowers.

Set in the ultimate crafting space, Curious Crafting is a short form pre-school age series about the joy of making crafts. I lead a rotating cast of adorable little preschoolers (including my own) making magic out of common household objects.

In each episode we transform recycled items into magical crafts like a milk carton school bus, paper bag puppet or cotton pad turtle. The crafters learn and laugh their way through each activity while demonstrating what their young imaginations can create.

Curious Crafting shares the adventure and joy of making art with takeaway lessons for creating crafts at home.
