- Make your paint dabbers. Clip a clothespin onto each pom pom to create an easy handle. Set out a small amount of red, black and green paint, with one dabber for each colour.
- Dab on the red petals. Dip a pom pom lightly in red paint and press it onto the petals. Try leaving a little white space between the dots or overlapping them to build up the colour.
- Add the black centre and green stem and leaves. Use the second pom pom to dab black paint in the middle. and green paint for the leaves and stem.
- Let it dry flat. Display the finished artwork on its own or group several paintings together under the words “We Remember.”
Talk About Remembrance as You Paint
As children work, you might say, “On Remembrance Day, we wear poppies to honour people who served and to remember those who died in war.” Give children time to ask questions or simply enjoy a quiet moment while they paint.
For a classroom display, invite each child to paint one poppy. Once the paintings are dry, arrange them together to make a field of poppies, with room underneath for children to share what peace means to them.
