Creative Ways to Celebrate Our Planet

Process art for Earth Day isn’t about getting it perfect. It’s about slowing down, connecting with nature, and letting kids make something their own. If you’re looking for low-pressure, high-fun ways to celebrate Earth Day with your kids, process art is where it’s at. Think open-ended projects that invite kids to explore textures, experiment with color, and express their own ideas—no templates, no “right way,” and definitely no stress if it turns out messy (it will). Earth Day process art is all about connecting with nature through creativity, and bonus—it’s usually super easy to set up with stuff you already have.

At our house, Earth Day isn’t just about recycling and turning off the lights (though we talk about those things too). It’s also a great chance to slow down and get creative with natural materials, found objects, and recycled supplies. My kids love it because they can lead the way and there’s no pressure to make something “perfect.” And I love it because it turns into the sweetest collection of Earth-inspired art that actually feels meaningful.

Why You’ll Love These Earth Day Process Art Projects

There are about a million reasons to love process art, but Earth Day gives us a little extra inspiration. These kinds of projects are:

  • Kid-led and perfect for all ages, from toddlers to early elementary.
  • Nature-connected, using materials that help kids notice and appreciate the world around them.
  • Budget-friendly, especially if you repurpose recyclables or go on a nature walk to gather supplies.
  • Relaxing and sensory-rich, making them perfect for after school or weekend family time.

Whether your child wants to paint with leaves, collage with paper scraps, or create a masterpiece from mud (yes, really), it all counts as Earth Day process art.

Earth Day Process Art Ideas

You don’t need a fancy setup or an overflowing art shelf to make Earth Day process art magic. Try some of these easy set-up ideas to get started:

Rock Painted Earth Day Craft

Rock painting is such a simple but satisfying Earth Day craft. Kids get to connect with nature while transforming a regular rock into something colorful and creative.

How to Set Up:

Grab some smooth rocks, blue and green paint, and paintbrushes. Show your child how to paint the rock to resemble the Earth—or let them freestyle their own planet design. Once dry, display them in the garden, on a nature walk, or gift to a friend as a little Earth Day surprise.

Kitchen Tool Stamping Earth Day Craft

Repurpose those potato mashers, forks, or spatulas into unique Earth Day stampers. This easy craft combines creativity with a little sensory fun!

How to Set Up:

Pour blue and green paint onto a tray or plate. Give your child various kitchen tools to dip and press onto paper or cardboard. Talk about how the overlapping colors can look like land and water, just like our Earth.

Coffee Filter Earth Day Craft

This easy Earth Day craft is all about color blending and process art. Coffee filters magically transform into beautiful mini Earths with just a little paint or food coloring.

How to Set Up:

Place a coffee filter on a tray or plate. Water down blue and green food coloring or watercolor paint. Let your child use a dropper, paintbrush, or spoon to apply the colors. Watch as the colors spread and blend to create a dreamy Earth effect. Let it dry before hanging in the window!

Earth Day Sticky Board Craft

Sticky boards are perfect for toddlers and preschoolers, and this Earth Day version lets them explore shapes, colors, and textures.

How to Set Up:

Tape contact paper (sticky side out) to a wall or window. Cut out blue and green tissue paper squares, paper scraps, or nature shapes. Invite your child to “build” the Earth or a nature scene right on the sticky surface.

Giant Earth Day Painting

Get messy (in the best way) with this giant collaborative Earth Day painting. It’s a fun way to go big while celebrating our beautiful planet.

How to Set Up:

Roll out butcher paper and draw a big circle outline for the Earth. Give kids blue and green paint and let them fill it in however they like—brushes, rollers, hands, or even sponges. Add clouds or trees if you want!

Pom Pom Painted Earth Day Craft

Painting with pom poms is a favorite in our house. This Earth Day version turns simple materials into a globe-inspired masterpiece.

How to Set Up:

Clip pom poms onto clothespins to make little paint dabbers. Pour blue and green paint onto a plate and invite your child to stamp the colors onto cardstock in a circular shape. Let it dry and display your mini Earths proudly.

Recycled Paper Earth Day Craft

Turn paper scraps into art with this creative recycled Earth Day project. It’s a fun way to reuse materials and talk about caring for the planet.

How to Set Up:

Gather scrap paper, cardboard, and old magazines. Cut or tear them into pieces. Invite your child to glue the bits into a collage shaped like Earth, a tree, or their favorite animal. Add markers or crayons to decorate more.

Make Your Own Nature Paint Brushes

Create your own paint brushes using twigs and leaves! This is a great way to get creative while exploring textures found in nature.

How to Set Up:

Collect sticks, pine needles, leaves, or flowers on a nature walk. Tie or tape the materials onto the end of the sticks to form paintbrushes. Dip into paint and explore the different marks each brush makes.

Leaf Painting

Leaf painting is a classic Earth Day activity and for good reason—it’s beautiful and helps kids notice the little details in nature.

How to Set Up:

Collect a variety of leaves. Pour paint onto a tray and let your child brush paint onto the leaves, then press them onto paper to make prints. Try different colors or layering for added fun.

Cotton Pad Earth Day

Celebrate Earth Day by crafting a miniature version of our planet with our Cotton Pad Earth Day Craft, a simple yet impactful project that shows how easy it is to use recycled materials to make something beautiful.

How to Set Up:

On a piece of cardboard draw a circle. Glue down cotton pads. Add some water and green and blue food coloring to bowls. Use eye droppers to color the cotton pads.

In each episode we transform recycled items into magical crafts like a milk carton school bus, paper bag puppet or cotton pad turtle. The crafters learn and laugh their way through each activity while demonstrating what their young imaginations can create.

Curious Crafting shares the adventure and joy of making art with takeaway lessons for creating crafts at home.
