Have you ever noticed how kids light up at the sight of a rainbow, stretching across the sky like a colorful bridge to a treasure? It’s the kind of natural magic that grabs their attention every time. But as much as we chase them, rainbows always seem just out of reach, a beautiful illusion we can’t quite touch. So we decided, why not bring the rainbow right into our living room where we can see it up close anytime we want? Our Rainbow Color Reveal Activity is a fun and simple craft activity that reveals the elusive beauty of rainbows a little bit at a time!

How to Make A Color Reveal Rainbow Activity

Material List:

  • Paper towel
  • Dot markers (various colors)
  • Black Sharpie
  • Bowl
  • Water
  • Paint brush spray bottle with water
  • Tray

Directions

  1. Prepare Your Paper Towels: Take two connected sheets of paper towel.
  2. Draw the Rainbow: Using a black permanent marker on the top sheet of paper towel, draw the arcs of the rainbow. Press firmly to ensure the design slightly imprints onto the second sheet.
  1. Add Color to the Second Sheet: On the second sheet, fill in the arcs with the different colors of the rainbow from red to purple using washable markers or dark markers.
  1. Reassemble and Prepare for the Reveal: Carefully lay the top sheet back over the colored bottom sheet. Place this prepared “rainbow” on a tray to keep your workspace clean.
  1. Water Painting Magic: Fill a bowl with water and provide a paintbrush. Invite your child to gently brush water over the top sheet. As the water soaks through, it will reveal the stunning rainbow colors hidden below. Alternative: you can also try using eye droppers or even a spray bottle filled with water to bring out the color in the rainbow.

Tips for Success

  • Use a generous amount of color with the washable markers for a vivid reveal.
  • Encourage light brush strokes to prevent the paper towel from tearing.
  • Place a waterproof mat under the tray for an easier cleanup process.

Set in the ultimate crafting space, Curious Crafting is a short form pre-school age series about the joy of making crafts. I lead a rotating cast of adorable little preschoolers (including my own) making magic out of common household objects.

In each episode we transform recycled items into magical crafts like a milk carton school bus, paper bag puppet or cotton pad turtle. The crafters learn and laugh their way through each activity while demonstrating what their young imaginations can create.

Curious Crafting shares the adventure and joy of making art with takeaway lessons for creating crafts at home.
