Materials

Before we begin, gather these materials for the Construction Site Ice Painting:

  • Small construction vehicles (toy trucks, diggers, or bulldozers)
  • Large silicone ice cube or cupcake dish (big enough to fit the small trucks)
  • Liquid watercolors or food coloring
  • Water
  • A large sheet of paper or printer paper
  • Tray or shallow container to contain the mess (for the printers paper)

Construction Site Ice Painting: A Cool and Creative Adventure!

Instructions:

  1. Freeze the Construction Site:

First, place the small construction vehicles in the large silicone ice cube or cupcake dish. Fill it with water and add a few drops of liquid watercolors or food coloring of your choice. Pop the dish in the freezer and let it freeze overnight. The result? A construction site on wheels, ready to roll into creative action!

  1. Paint the Frozen Adventure:

Once the ice construction site is ready, take it out of the freezer and place it on a tray or shallow container to catch the melting water. Now, let your little artists unleash their creativity as they use the ice trucks to paint on a large sheet of paper or printer paper. For an extra touch, you can draw some roads on the paper to set the scene or let their imagination roam freely.

  1. Watch the Magic Unfold:

As the kids paint with the icy construction vehicles, the frozen wheels will glide and slide across the paper, creating vibrant tracks and colorful patterns. It’s a delightful mix of art and play that sparks wonder and joy!

Benefits of Construction Site Ice Painting:

Aside from the fun and creativity, Construction Site Ice Painting offers several benefits for your little ones:

  • Sensory Experience: The cold sensation of the ice and the smooth movement of the trucks engage the senses and promote sensory exploration.
  • Fine Motor Skills: Maneuvering the ice trucks and painting with precision hones fine motor skills and hand-eye coordination.
  • Imagination and Play: Playing with construction vehicles in a new and innovative way fosters imaginative play and storytelling.
  • Color Mixing: Experimenting with different watercolors on the melting ice encourages color mixing and discovery.

Containing the Mess

During the Construction Site Ice Painting activity, containing the mess is essential to ensure a stress-free and enjoyable experience. Using a tray or shallow container to hold the ice construction site helps prevent melting water from dripping onto the floor or table. Placing the paper within the confines of the tray also helps keep the colorful art within reach and minimizes the chances of watercolor spills. Providing aprons or old shirts for the young artists can protect their clothing from potential stains, allowing them to immerse themselves fully in the creative process without worries. When all else fails take this activity outside!

Getting Rid of Food Coloring Stains

While food coloring can create vibrant artwork, it may leave some stains on little hands and clothing. Thankfully, dealing with food coloring stains is relatively simple. To remove food coloring stains from hands, encourage your kids to wash them with soap and warm water. If the stains are stubborn, add a small amount of baking soda to the soap for extra cleaning power. For clothing stains, act quickly and rinse the affected area with cold water to dilute the color. Then, pre-treat the stain with liquid laundry detergent or a stain remover before washing the garment as usual. This should help lift most of the food coloring stains, leaving your little artists stain-free and ready for their next creative adventure!

Construction Site Ice Painting is a thrilling and artistic adventure that combines the joy of construction play with the magic of icy colors. With toy trucks on frozen wheels, your little artists will create a masterpiece that glides and slides across the paper, inspiring awe and wonder. So, gear up for this cool and creative project, and let the construction site come to life on a canvas of frozen fun! Happy painting and playing!

TV Show: Curious Crafting

I’m so excited to share my crafting TV show Curious Crafting which launched in July 2022 on TVOkids and TVOkids YouTube! Season 2 airs in the summer of 2023! We were also nominated in 2023 for Best Live Action Preschool Series by the Youth Media Alliance Awards of Excellence.

Set in the ultimate crafting space, Curious Crafting is a short form pre-school age series about the joy of making crafts. I lead a rotating cast of adorable little preschoolers (including my own) making magic out of common household objects.

In each episode we transform recycled items into magical crafts like a milk carton school bus, paper bag puppet or cotton pad turtle. The crafters learn and laugh their way through each activity while demonstrating what their young imaginations can create.

Curious Crafting shares the adventure and joy of making art with takeaway lessons for creating crafts at home.

This show designed for toddlers and preschoolers 2.5 years old and up.
