Looking for a fun and practical craft project to do with your kids? Making a DIY watering can from a milk jug is a fantastic way to combine creativity with functionality.
This simple project not only teaches kids about recycling and repurposing but also results in a handy tool they can use to water plants in the garden.

Why You’ll Love This Activity
You’ll love this DIY watering can craft because it’s easy, inexpensive, and a great way to teach kids about the importance of reusing materials.
Kids get to decorate their watering cans with colorful Sharpies, allowing them to express their creativity. Plus, they’ll be proud to use their own creations to help care for the garden.
It’s a win-win activity that combines crafting with a bit of gardening fun.
Materials Needed
- Milk jug
- Permanent markers or Sharpies
- Small screwdriver
How to Make a DIY Watering Can
- Decorate the Jug: Give your kids the Sharpies and let them go wild decorating the outside of the jug. They can draw flowers, patterns, or anything their imagination inspires. This step is all about letting their creativity shine.

- Prepare the Spout: Using a small screwdriver, carefully poke several holes into the cap of the milk jug. These holes will allow the water to sprinkle out when you pour, just like a real watering can. Make sure the holes are evenly spaced for a nice, even flow.

- Test It Out: Fill the jug with water and screw the cap back on. Let your kids test out their new watering can in the garden. They’ll love seeing how their decorated jug works as a real tool!

This DIY watering can craft is a delightful way to spend an afternoon, blending creativity with a bit of hands-on gardening.
Plus, it’s a wonderful opportunity to teach kids about sustainability and the joy of caring for plants.

So grab those old milk jugs and Sharpies, and get ready for some crafty fun!
