Why You’ll Love This Activity

You’ll love making grass seed heads with kids because it’s a fun, hands-on project that combines crafting with a bit of science. This activity teaches kids about plant growth and care in a way that’s engaging and interactive. Watching the grass grow day by day is exciting for kids, and they’ll love taking responsibility for watering and caring for their new green-haired friend.

Materials Need for Grass Seed Head

  • Old nylon
  • Glass
  • Potting soil
  • Grass seed
  • Elastic bands
  • Waterproof glue (if you have avaliable, if not we used just regular glue and made sure not to put too much water on the face while watering the grass seed head)
  • Googley Eyes
  • Felt
  • Spray bottle and water
  • Container to hold head such as tin can or small clay pot, mug or yogurt container.

How To Make A Grass Seed Head

  1. Grab your nylon and stretch the opening over a glass or cup. This will make it easier to add the grass seed and soil.
  1. Add the grass seed first. Make sure it remains at the bottom of the nylon. You will eventually turn it over and the grass seed will be at the top of your grass seed head to create the hair.
  1. Next, add the soil. Any potting soil will do. You want to add enough so that head will be big enough to sit on top of your container.
  1. Once you have added the soil, remove the nylon from the glass and move the soil to the bottom of the nylon. Start to shape the head into a ball shape. Once all the soil it at the bottom twist and tie the end of the nylon to keep the soil in place and to create the head. If you have a lot of left over nylon you can cut it off.
  1. Create the nose and ears. Grab some nylon and soil in the front on the head where you want the nose to be. Start to twist it. Secure it with the elastic band. Repeat the same process on either side the head for the ears.
  2. Time to create the face. Glue on the googley eyes. Out of the felt, cut out a smile and glue it on below the nose.
  1. Place your seed head in a small pot or tin can.
  1. When watering your grass seed head for the first time you can either place it carefully under a tap and soak the seeds or dunk the grass seed head into a clean water in order to soak the soil all the way through.
  1. Place your seed head in sunny spot on a window ledge.
  1. In order for the seeds to start growing, they will need lots of water and sunlight. Water the top of the grass seed head with a spray bottle throughly each day to keep it moist. Check out it twice a day and water if it feels dry.
  1. It won’t take long for your grass seed head to start growing hair! Watch as it grows longer and longer. Once it gets to a certina length cut it and let it grow back. See how long it will get before it starts to fall down. Use small elastics to create different hair styles or give your head a buzz cut!

TV Show: Curious Crafting

I’m so excited to share my crafting TV show Curious Crafting which launched in July 2022 on TVOkids and TVOkids YouTube! Season 2 aired in August 2023! My show was also nominated in 2023 for Best Live Action Preschool Series by the Youth Media Alliance Awards of Excellence.

Curious Crafting Season 1 is also now airing in Australia on ABC! Watch it here!

Set in the ultimate crafting space, Curious Crafting is a short form pre-school age series about the joy of making crafts. I lead a rotating cast of adorable little preschoolers (including my own) making magic out of common household objects.

In each episode we transform recycled items into magical crafts like a milk carton school bus, paper bag puppet or cotton pad turtle. The crafters learn and laugh their way through each activity while demonstrating what their young imaginations can create.

Curious Crafting shares the adventure and joy of making art with takeaway lessons for creating crafts at home.

This show designed for toddlers and preschoolers 2.5 years old and up.
