There’s something so cozy about fall—the colors, the crunch of leaves, and the fresh, earthy scents. One of the best ways to bring the season indoors is with a classic fall sensory bin! This sensory bin lets kids explore fall textures and colors up close, with natural elements like acorns, pine cones, and leaves. It’s a fun, hands-on way for little ones to connect with the outdoors while staying cozy inside, and it’s perfect for sparking curiosity and imaginative play.

Sensory bins like this one are wonderful because they’re all about exploration and discovery. Kids love sifting through the bin, finding little treasures, and sorting them into bowls or scooping them up with spoons. Plus, the mix of materials—from dried chickpeas to miniature woodland creatures—brings fall to life in a way that’s both educational and deeply satisfying for little hands.

Why You’ll Love This Sensory Bin

You’ll love this fall sensory bin because it’s simple to set up, budget-friendly, and packed with endless possibilities for play. It encourages fine motor skills, sensory exploration, and imaginative play all in one. Best of all, it brings a bit of the outdoors in, allowing kids to learn and play in a sensory-rich environment without leaving the house.

Materials

  • Large sensory bin
  • Dried chickpeas (or another filler like rice or beans)
  • Sticks
  • Real or artificial leaves
  • Acorns
  • Pine cones
  • Small apples (real or faux)
  • Small pieces of wood
  • Wooden bowls
  • Scoopers and spoons
  • Leaf confetti
  • Small woodland creatures (toy owls, squirrels, deer, foxes)

Instructions to Set Up Your Classic Fall Sensory Bin

1. Fill the Base:

Start by filling the sensory bin with dried chickpeas to create a base layer. This will give kids a filler to scoop, pour, and dig through.

2. Add Natural Elements:

Layer in the sticks, acorns, pine cones, and small pieces of wood. These items give the bin a natural, fall look and provide different textures for kids to explore.

3. Arrange Leaves and Confetti:

Scatter leaves (real or artificial) and a sprinkle of leaf confetti on top of the bin. The mix of textures and colors adds to the visual appeal and gives kids more to discover.

4. Include Wooden Bowls and Scoopers:

Place wooden bowls and scoops along the side of the bin. Kids will love using these tools to collect and sort their favorite fall items.

5. Add Woodland Creatures:

Finally, place the small toy animals around the bin. These woodland creatures make the bin even more exciting and encourage pretend play as kids can “find” animals in their little fall world.

This classic fall sensory bin brings the season’s best to your playroom, offering hands-on learning that captures the magic of autumn. It’s perfect for rainy days, quiet afternoons, or any time you want to add a little bit of fall fun to your day!

TV Show: Curious Crafting

I’m so excited to share my crafting TV show Curious Crafting which launched in July 2022 on TVOkids and TVOkids YouTube! Season 2 aired in August 2023! My show was also nominated in 2023 for Best Live Action Preschool Series by the Youth Media Alliance Awards of Excellence.

Curious Crafting Season 1 is also now airing in Australia on ABC! Watch it here!

Set in the ultimate crafting space, Curious Crafting is a short form pre-school age series about the joy of making crafts. I lead a rotating cast of adorable little preschoolers (including my own) making magic out of common household objects.

In each episode we transform recycled items into magical crafts like a milk carton school bus, paper bag puppet or cotton pad turtle. The crafters learn and laugh their way through each activity while demonstrating what their young imaginations can create.

Curious Crafting shares the adventure and joy of making art with takeaway lessons for creating crafts at home.

This show designed for toddlers and preschoolers 2.5 years old and up.
