Benefits of Sensory Play

Engaging in sensory play provides a plethora of benefits for young children. Here are five of them:

  1. Cognitive Development: Sensory play encourages children to think critically and make observations. They’ll ask questions like “Why does this feel this way?” or “What happens when I mix these?”
  2. Fine Motor Skills Enhancement: Using scoopers and pouring from bowls helps to improve the dexterity of small muscles in a child’s hand. This is crucial for future skills such as writing.
  3. Emotional Regulation: Sensory bins can have a calming effect on children. The repetitive nature of scooping and pouring can be therapeutic and help regulate emotions.
  4. Language Development: Children can expand their vocabulary as they describe what they feel, see, and do. Words like “rough”, “soft”, “slippery”, and “grainy” come into play.
  5. Creativity and Imagination: Sensory play is open-ended. There’s no right or wrong way to play, allowing children’s creativity to flourish. They might imagine the beans as a ‘fall forest floor’ or the pom poms as ‘falling leaves’.

Materials

  • A large, shallow bin or container.
  • Black beans (to be used as the base)
  • Fall-coloured pom poms (reds, oranges, yellows, browns)
  • Acorns
  • Pine cones
  • Fall-shaped cookie cutters (like leaves, pumpkins, etc.)
  • Artificial or real leaves (ensure they are clean and safe for play)
  • Scoopers
  • Bowls

Instructions

  1. Pour the black beans into the bin to create the base.
  2. Sprinkle in the fall-coloured pom poms throughout the beans.
  3. Place fall-shaped cookie cutters and leaves (artificial or real) on top.
  4. Add acorns and pine cones as well.
  5. Add scoopers and bowls to the side or within the bin.
  6. Encourage your child to scoop, pour, and explore the contents of the bin!

Set in the ultimate crafting space, Curious Crafting is a short form pre-school age series about the joy of making crafts. I lead a rotating cast of adorable little preschoolers (including my own) making magic out of common household objects.

In each episode we transform recycled items into magical crafts like a milk carton school bus, paper bag puppet or cotton pad turtle. The crafters learn and laugh their way through each activity while demonstrating what their young imaginations can create.

Curious Crafting shares the adventure and joy of making art with takeaway lessons for creating crafts at home.

This show designed for toddlers and preschoolers 2.5 years old and up.
