This fish bones straw threading activity is one of those simple setups that ends up getting a ton of playtime. It’s colorful, hands-on, and gives kids a clear goal—slide the straws onto the sticks and build their fish’s bones.

If you’re looking for something low prep that still supports real learning, this is it. It’s the kind of activity you can set out and let your child take the lead.

Materials

  • Wooden block with one groove
  • Wooden sticks or dowels
  • Cut straws in rainbow colors
  • Cardstock or white foam sheet fish head and tail
  • Markers to decorate fish head and tail
  • Bowl to hold straws

How to Set It Up

  1. Start by inserting your wooden sticks into the groove of the block. Make sure they are evenly spaced so there’s room for threading.
  2. From white cardstock cut out a fish head and tail. Let your toddler or preschooler decorate them using markers, crayons or whatever you have available.
  3. Add your fish head to one end of the groove and the tail to the other end so it looks like a fish shape across the sticks. You can use tape to secure it if necessary.
  4. Cut straws into small pieces and place them in a bowl. Mix up the colors so it feels inviting and easy to grab.
  5. That’s it. No complicated instructions needed.
  6. Show your child how to pick up a straw piece and slide it down a stick. After that, let them explore.

Why This Activity Works

This activity gives kids a clear purpose. There’s something really satisfying about watching the sticks fill up with color.

It also has just the right level of challenge. It’s not too easy, but it’s not frustrating either. Kids can figure it out quickly, which builds confidence.

The repetition is key. Sliding, stacking, and adjusting the straws helps kids stay focused while practicing important skills. And because there’s no “right way” to do it, kids can create patterns, mix colors, or just fill each stick however they want.

What Are Fine Motor Skills?

Fine motor skills are the small movements we make using our hands and fingers. These are the skills kids use for things like holding a pencil, cutting with scissors, doing up buttons, and feeding themselves.

In this activity, kids are using fine motor skills every time they pick up a straw, line it up, and push it down the stick. It might look simple, but it takes coordination, control, and strength.

These small movements build over time and help prepare kids for bigger tasks like writing and self-care skills.

Benefits of This Activity

One of the biggest benefits is hand-eye coordination. Kids have to look at the stick, guide the straw, and adjust their movement to get it in place.

It also builds hand strength. Grabbing small pieces and pushing them down takes effort, which helps strengthen those small muscles. There’s also a focus element. Kids naturally slow down and concentrate because the task requires attention.

And finally, it encourages independence. Once they understand what to do, they can keep going on their own.

Easy Ways to Extend the Play

You can easily change this activity to keep it fresh.

  • Try color matching by asking your child to group the same colors on each stick.
  • Create patterns like red, blue, red, blue.
  • Count how many straws go on each stick.

You can also leave it completely open-ended and let your child explore however they want.

This activity is great for toddlers and preschoolers, around ages 2–5. Younger toddlers may need a little help at the start.

Use rigatoni pasta to make it easier. A quick demonstration also helps.
  3. Is this activity safe?
Yes, with supervision. Make sure straw pieces are large enough that they are not a choking hazard.
  4. How long will kids stay engaged?
Many kids will play for 10–20 minutes or longer, especially if they enjoy repeating the motion. My kids loved to make believe with their fish and turned it into a game. There lots of run for creativity in this activity.
  5. Can I use something else instead of straws?
Yes. You can use cut pool noodles, pasta, or large beads. Anything that can slide onto a stick will work.
