Why You’ll Love Making This Activity

You’ll love making this fizzy ice science experiment with your kids because it’s a fun, educational, and easy-to-set-up activity that provides endless entertainment.

The vibrant colors and fizzy reactions are fascinating for kids to watch and play with, making it a great way to introduce basic scientific concepts in a playful and engaging manner. Plus, it’s a fantastic way to keep kids cool and occupied during the summer.

This activity encourages kids to explore their senses, develop fine motor skills, and understand cause and effect.

The process of adding vinegar to baking soda-covered ice and watching the fizzing reaction is not only fun but also a great learning experience. It’s an activity that combines creativity, science, and sensory play all in one.

Materials Needed

  • Sensory bin
  • Ice
  • Baking soda
  • Small bowls
  • Food coloring
  • Vinegar
  • Eye droppers

How to Set Up

  1. Prepare the Ice: Fill small bowls with vinegar and add a few drops of different food coloring to each. Mix well. Provide eye droppers for the kids to use.
  1. Set Up the Sensory Bin: Place lots of ice cubes in a sensory bin. Spread them out evenly to cover the bottom of the bin.
  1. Add Baking Soda: Generously sprinkle baking soda over the ice cubes. Make sure the ice is well-covered for maximum fizzing action.
  1. Start the Fun: Show the kids how to use the eye droppers to squirt vinegar onto the baking soda-covered ice cubes. Watch as the vinegar reacts with the baking soda, creating fizzy, bubbling reactions.

    Behind the Science

The fizzing reaction you see when vinegar meets baking soda is a simple chemical reaction. Baking soda, or sodium bicarbonate, is a base, and vinegar, or acetic acid, is an acid.

When these two substances mix, they react to form carbonic acid, which quickly breaks down into carbon dioxide gas and water. The bubbles and fizz you see are the carbon dioxide gas escaping from the mixture.

This reaction is not only exciting to watch but also a great way to introduce kids to basic chemistry concepts in a fun and interactive way.

Curious Crafting Season 1 is also now airing in Australia on ABC! Watch it here!

Set in the ultimate crafting space, Curious Crafting is a short form pre-school age series about the joy of making crafts. I lead a rotating cast of adorable little preschoolers (including my own) making magic out of common household objects.

In each episode we transform recycled items into magical crafts like a milk carton school bus, paper bag puppet or cotton pad turtle. The crafters learn and laugh their way through each activity while demonstrating what their young imaginations can create.

Curious Crafting shares the adventure and joy of making art with takeaway lessons for creating crafts at home.
