Make a snowflake craft using a glue gun and water color paints with your toddler or preschooler.
Have you ever used a glue gun to create the outline of a craft and then have your child paint inside using water colors? We have done a few crafts like this and each time I try it I am always amazed at the results.
First, off the glue gun acts and a natural barrier to the paint so even the smallest kids can stay within the lines (even though that is not something we really care about here). and Second, the prep is minimal and the process a great way to keep kids entertained and off screens!
The first time we tried this, my kids were genuinely shocked that the glue lines stayed white—and then immediately wanted to make “just one more.” That’s always my sign a project is a keeper.
Materials
- Watercolor paper
- Glue gun
- Watercolor paints
- Paintbrush
How to Set It Up
- Place watercolor paper on a protected surface and plug in the glue gun so it can warm up fully. Using the glue gun is definitely an activity suitable for only adults. I sometimes let my older kids use it under supervision.
- Using the glue gun, draw a snowflake design directly onto the paper. Keep the lines slightly raised and connected. Allow the glue to cool and harden completely.
- Once the glue is dry, invite kids to paint over the entire snowflake using watercolor paints and a brush. They can paint inside the snowflake as well as around it. Or they can just paint inside like mine did.
- The watercolor will resist the glue lines, making the snowflake pop as the colors flow around it.
Glue gun snowflakes are simple, striking, and endlessly repeatable—perfect for cozy winter art days that feel creative without feeling complicated.
