Halloween Suncatchers

Materials

  • Black and white construction paper
  • Tissue paper squares in hauntingly beautiful shades: green, black, orange, and purple
  • Scissors (safe for little hands)
  • Contact paper
  • Masking tape
  • Halloween shape templates: bat, pumpkin, spider, and ghost
  • Googley eyes

Crafting the Suncatchers

  1. Template Magic: Using the Halloween templates, trace your chosen shapes onto the black construction paper.
  1. Cutting Time: Carefully cut out the inside of your shapes, leaving a thin border, creating an outline.
  1. Sticky Business: Cut out two pieces of contact paper that are slightly larger than your Halloween shape. Remove the backing from one piece and stick your construction paper shape onto it.
  1. Let the Colors Shine: Place the tissue paper squares onto the sticky side of the contact paper, filling the inside of your Halloween shape. Feel free to overlap colors for a unique effect!
  1. Seal the Deal: Once satisfied, remove the backing from the second piece of contact paper and place it sticky-side-down on top of your shape, sandwiching the tissue paper.
  1. Final Touches: Trim any excess contact paper around the edges and proudly hang your suncatcher in a window to let the sunlight bring it to life!
  2. Add the Faces: Use googley eyes and black construction paper to add faces to the pumpkin, ghost bat and spider! Add googley eyes to the spider and googley eyes and fangs cut from white construction paper for the bat.

Tips for a Ghoulishly Successful Craft

  • Template Twist: If you’re feeling extra artsy, skip the templates and try hand-drawing your shapes!
  • Color Magic: Mix and match tissue paper colors for a unique, magical effect. A multi-colored ghost? Why not!
  • Teamwork: This craft is even more fun when done with friends or siblings. Plus, an extra set of hands can help with the trickier bits!

Set in the ultimate crafting space, Curious Crafting is a short form pre-school age series about the joy of making crafts. I lead a rotating cast of adorable little preschoolers (including my own) making magic out of common household objects.

In each episode we transform recycled items into magical crafts like a milk carton school bus, paper bag puppet or cotton pad turtle. The crafters learn and laugh their way through each activity while demonstrating what their young imaginations can create.

Curious Crafting shares the adventure and joy of making art with takeaway lessons for creating crafts at home.
