Make suncatchers using nature and ice for kids of all ages.
The temperatures are reaching well below freezing and will be for at least the next two weeks. That means we are using the outdoors to create frozen crafts!
This ice suncatcher craft is super simple but engaging enough for toddlers, preschoolers and even older kids. Although it takes some time to see the final results but the process to make it is a great way to outside when it’s cold outside.
Materials for Ice Suncather Craft:
- Plastic plate with a lip
- Water
- Nature
- Freezing temperatures outside
- String
How to Set Up Ice Suncatcher Craft:
- Grab your plastic plate. We used our toddler plates. They are large round plastic plates with a high lip to hold water. Next, you’lll need to collect some nature. Since it was winter and the ground covered in 30 inches of snow, finding nature was a bit of a challenge but a great way to get my kids outdoors in the cold.
- We found dried leaves blowing in the wind, twigs and even an old Christmas tree. Use whatever natural material you have even sticks, pebbles or even dried indoor plants.
- Place your plate outside when the weather is cold enough to freeze water. Fill the plate with water.
- Arrange your nature in the plate. Make sure the items are covered by the water. Add more water if necessary.
- Finally, cut string to create a handle. Tie is in a loop and place one end in the water to freeze.
- Leave the plate in an area where it can freeze. Depending on your temperature this could take a few hours or over night.
- Once the water has completely frozen, gently remove the ice suncatcher from the plate and hang it on a tree branch outside!
