Create a winter construction site sensory bin using snow and construction trucks for toddlers and preschoolers.

When we got a huge dump of snow outside, using it in hands-on sensory play inside is a must. Over the years we have done tons of indoor snow activities from dinosaurs, kitchen to using it as a canvas for painting and this one equally as fun.

If you have a construction or truck fan at home this one is a must for the winter!

All my kids love playing with construction vehicles (even my girls who are not much into cars). There is something about pretending to be a construction workers that I think all kids can enjoy.

This winter construction site sensory bin mixes all the best of winter (snow) and construction sites (trucks, rocks and more). All you need is a big imagination and cold weather. A great one for fine motor skills development and sensory exploration!

Materials:

  • Sensory bin
  • Snow
  • Construction vehicles
  • Rocks

How to Set Up:

  1. First thing first is we need the snow! After you’ve had a dump of snow (big or small) head outdoors with your sensory bin in hand and fill it up. Then put on your gloves (get your toddlers to help with part) and use your hands to press the snow down. This will help to keep the snow from melting too fast indoors.
  1. Next, add your rocks, twigs and construction vehicles. You can pile them up in the corner or create sectioned off small areas like we did. We also added other construction site toys likes signs and workers.
  2. Then let your toddler, preschooler or older child explore!

How they Played

As soon as I set this one out the kids were really into it. Digging in the snow and dumping. The only down side is that for some reason I didn’t have a dump truck so they were unable to collect all the snow in one vehicle and move it around! They dig a huge whole in the middle and lined it with rocks to create a watering hole, piled rocks in one corner and built a road!

Clean Up

When they were done I removed the trucks and placed them back in the toy bin. I collected the rocks and stored them in a ziplock for another sensory activity! Then I dumped the melted snow and water combine in tub!

TV Show: Curious Crafting

I’m so excited to share my crafting TV show Curious Crafting which launched in July 2022 on TVOkids and TVOkids YouTube! Season 2 aired in August 2023! My show was also nominated in 2023 for Best Live Action Preschool Series by the Youth Media Alliance Awards of Excellence.

Curious Crafting Season 1 is also now airing in Australia on ABC! Watch it here!

Set in the ultimate crafting space, Curious Crafting is a short form pre-school age series about the joy of making crafts. I lead a rotating cast of adorable little preschoolers (including my own) making magic out of common household objects.

In each episode we transform recycled items into magical crafts like a milk carton school bus, paper bag puppet or cotton pad turtle. The crafters learn and laugh their way through each activity while demonstrating what their young imaginations can create.

Curious Crafting shares the adventure and joy of making art with takeaway lessons for creating crafts at home.

This show designed for toddlers and preschoolers 2.5 years old and up.
