If there’s one thing my kids never get tired of, it’s building with LEGO usually with instructions but as they get older we are exploring making things using our imaginations. Recently we tried something new that completely captured their attention: a LEGO Bridge Building Challenge. It turned into an entire afternoon of creative thinking, testing ideas, and laughing at bridges that completely collapsed (and then rebuilding them even stronger).
This challenge has quickly become one of our favorite ways to play with LEGO because it mixes all the fun of free building with a little bit of science and engineering. We first did this on a rainy Saturday at home, but honestly, this is the kind of thing you could pull out anytime. And it works for all ages! Little ones can build simple, flat bridges, while older kids can get really creative with tall arches and super long spans.
Why You’ll Love This LEGO Bridge Building Challenge
- It keeps kids engaged for hours because there’s no “one right answer.”
- Helps kids understand how to plan, build, and redesign their ideas.
- Works with the LEGO pieces you already have—no fancy kits required.
- It’s the perfect mix of STEM and play.
- Encourages teamwork, patience, and problem-solving skills.

Materials You’ll Need
- LEGO baseplate (to act as your building surface)
- Flat blue LEGO pieces (to represent water—if you don’t have these, just pretend or use a sheet of white paper and draw a river using blue crayons or markers!)
- A random assortment of LEGO bricks in different sizes and shapes
- Optional: a few small toy cars, animals, or minifigures to “test” your bridge once it’s built
How to Set Up Your LEGO Bridge Challenge
- Create the River
Place a strip of blue LEGO pieces down the middle of the baseplate. This is your river. Leave a gap on either side of the blue for where your bridge will go.

- Decide on Your Goal
Are you building a bridge strong enough to hold three toy cars? Or the longest bridge you can make without falling? Choose your challenge (or come up with your own idea).

- Start Building
Use your LEGO pieces to build a bridge that connects one side of the river to the other. Encourage your kids to try different designs. Flat and wide? Tall and arched? Double-decker? There are so many ways to make a bridge.

The Engineering Process
Talk to your kids about the steps engineers take when they build real bridges:
- Plan: Think about what kind of bridge you want to make before you start.
- Build: Put your plan into action using LEGO bricks.
- Test: See if it works. Can a car drive over it? Can it hold a mini-figure?
- Improve: If it falls apart (which it probably will at some point), that’s totally fine! Think about what could make it stronger and rebuild.
Tips for Problem-Solving
- Make the base of your bridge wider or thicker if it keeps collapsing.
- Add supports underneath—think of them as LEGO “pillars.”
- Try using longer pieces for the top so your bridge doesn’t have gaps.
- If it tips over, check if one side is taller than the other and adjust.
This activity is all about experimenting and learning as you go. Sometimes the silliest-looking bridge ends up being the strongest!
Play Extensions
Once you’ve built your bridges, the fun doesn’t have to stop:
- Bridge Parade: Have your minifigures march across like a big celebration.
- Bridge Race: See whose bridge can hold the most cars or toys before it breaks.
- Bridge Redesign: Change the challenge—maybe now your bridge has to be taller, longer, or use fewer bricks.
The LEGO Bridge Building Challenge is such a fun way to mix learning with play. It’s a perfect rainy-day activity or after-dinner project that sparks imagination while giving kids a chance to practice real-world problem-solving. Every single bridge will be different, which makes this activity exciting every time you do it.
So next time you pull out that bin of LEGO, lay down a river and see what kinds of bridges your kids can dream up. They’ll surprise you with their creativity—and probably teach you a thing or two about perseverance along the way!

Curious Crafting Season 1 is also now airing in Australia on ABC! Watch it here!
Set in the ultimate crafting space, Curious Crafting is a short form pre-school age series about the joy of making crafts. I lead a rotating cast of adorable little preschoolers (including my own) making magic out of common household objects.
In each episode we transform recycled items into magical crafts like a milk carton school bus, paper bag puppet or cotton pad turtle. The crafters learn and laugh their way through each activity while demonstrating what their young imaginations can create.
Curious Crafting shares the adventure and joy of making art with takeaway lessons for creating crafts at home.
This show designed for toddlers and preschoolers 2.5 years old and up.
