One of my favorite things about camping with kids is how much more creative they get when they’re surrounded by nature. You know that magical time in the afternoon when the swimsuits are drying on the line, the s’mores haven’t started yet, and everyone needs something fun but calm to do? That’s when we pull out one of our favorite campsite activities: Nature Structures: Building With Sticks & Clay.
We first tried this at Haliburton Forest Reserve on a sunny weekend that was pure perfection. We didn’t even have a picnic table at our site, so we spread out a blanket, collected a pile of sticks, and got to work. Before long, the kids were building towers, houses, animal pens, and even a “castle” (that looked more like a fort, but we all applauded anyway!). It’s simple, low-prep, and such a fun way to mix engineering with creativity. They enjoyed this so much, we tried it again when we got home!
Why You’ll Love Nature Structures: Building With Sticks & Clay
- Uses materials you already have: sticks, clay, and your imagination.
- Encourages kids to plan, problem-solve, and experiment.
- Works with all ages—toddlers can make simple shapes, older kids can build more complex designs.
- No mess stress: Clay is easy to pack and cleanup is a breeze.
- Combines outdoor play with a little bit of science and art.
This activity is basically open-ended play disguised as a STEM challenge!

Materials You’ll Need
- Sticks (gathered from the campsite or trail – aim for similar lengths and thicknesses)
- Modeling clay or air-dry clay
- A flat surface (table, picnic blanket, or even a flat rock)
How to Create Stick and Clay Nature Structures
Step 1: Collect Your Sticks
Head out on a nature hunt! Look for straight sticks about the same size. Having a consistent size makes your building a little easier (though, honestly, part of the fun is figuring out how to make odd sticks work!).
Step 2: Prepare Your Workspace
Lay out your sticks and clay in an open area. Tear off small chunks of clay—you’ll use these like “glue” to hold the sticks together.

Step 3: Build a Base
Start with a simple square or triangle shape on the ground. Use small clay blobs to stick the ends of your sticks together. Press hard so they stay in place.

Step 4: Add Height
Once your base is steady, start building upward! Add sticks vertically, use clay at the joints, and experiment with walls, roofs, or towers.

Step 5: Test, Fix, and Try Again
Sometimes your first plan won’t hold. And that’s the best part! When it wobbles or collapses, talk with your kids about what went wrong. “Does it need thicker sticks? More clay? Should we make it shorter?” Then rebuild and try again. Failure is a sure fire way to success!
Talking About Engineering
This craft is a sneaky intro to engineering because kids are naturally exploring how structures stand up. You can introduce big concepts in simple ways:
- Balance: “If it’s tipping, maybe we need another stick on this side.”
- Strength: “The clay is like glue. The more we press it, the stronger it gets.”
- Shape: “Squares and triangles are both strong shapes, which one do you want to try?”
- Testing: “Let’s see if it stands on its own without holding it!”
They’ll love seeing their ideas become real, and it gives them confidence to problem-solve.
Tips for Problem-Solving
- Use shorter sticks to make a sturdier structure.
- Try a triangle base if squares keep collapsing.
- Pinch the clay really firmly so it grips both sticks.
- Keep a small pile of spare sticks so you can swap out ones that don’t fit.
Building Nature Structures with Sticks and Clay is one of those simple camping crafts that turns into something way bigger: teamwork, creativity, and engineering fun all at once. It’s quiet enough for a post-hike rest but exciting enough to keep kids engaged for ages.
So next time you head to a campground or even just take a nature walk, pack a little container of clay and let the kids’ imaginations (and structures!) rise as high as they can dream. It’s amazing to see what they come up with using just sticks and a bit of sticky clay!

TV Show: Curious Crafting
I’m so excited to share my crafting TV show Curious Crafting which launched in July 2022 on TVOkids and TVOkids YouTube! Season 2 aired in August 2023! My show was also nominated in 2023 for Best Live Action Preschool Series by the Youth Media Alliance Awards of Excellence.
Curious Crafting Season 1 is also now airing in Australia on ABC! Watch it here!
Set in the ultimate crafting space, Curious Crafting is a short form pre-school age series about the joy of making crafts. I lead a rotating cast of adorable little preschoolers (including my own) making magic out of common household objects.
In each episode we transform recycled items into magical crafts like a milk carton school bus, paper bag puppet or cotton pad turtle. The crafters learn and laugh their way through each activity while demonstrating what their young imaginations can create.
Curious Crafting shares the adventure and joy of making art with takeaway lessons for creating crafts at home.
This show designed for toddlers and preschoolers 2.5 years old and up.
