Materials You’ll Need

  • White paper plate
  • White construction paper
  • Black construction paper
  • Scissors
  • White crepe paper streamers
  • Double-sided tape or glue
  • Pencil

Tips for Success

  1. Double-Sided Tape Magic: Consider using double-sided tape instead of glue for a quicker and less messy craft experience. It allows the craft to be ready to go faster.
  2. Cutting Assistance: If your child is younger 3-5 , you may need to assist with cutting out the more intricate shapes, like the eyes and mouth. For older kid 6 years and up, have them cut their own items.
  3. Customization: Encourage your child to add their own creative touches, such as extra details like teeth or goofy eye expressions.

Skills Learned During This Activity

  • Fine Motor Skills: Cutting, tracing, and taping or gluing require precise hand movements, which are excellent for fine motor skill development.
  • Creativity: This craft provides an opportunity for kids to unleash their creativity by customizing their ghosts with unique features.
  • Spatial Awareness: As children position the ghost’s eyes, mouth, and streamers, they enhance their spatial awareness and problem-solving skills.
  • Following Instructions: Completing the steps of this craft helps children practice following instructions, fostering listening and attention skills.

How to Make A Paper Plate Ghost Craft

Now, let’s get started with the Paper Plate Ghost craft:

  1. Handprint Cutout: Begin by tracing your child’s hands onto the white paper and then cutting them out. These will be the ghost’s hands.
  1. Face and Features: Cut out eyes, a mouth, and any additional features like teeth or eye balls from the black paper. Also cut out two curved arms from the white construction paper.
  2. Ghostly Assembly: Attach the black paper features to the white paper plate using double-sided tape or glue. Encourage your child to create a friendly or spooky expression for their ghost.
  1. Arms and Hands: Attach the handprint cutouts to the top of the arms and then attached the arms to either side of the plate having the hands reaching upward. This gives your ghost a more lifelike appearance.
  2. Creepy Streamers: Cut strips of white crepe paper streamers and attach them to the bottom of the paper plate using tape. These will be your ghost’s trailing ectoplasmic streamers.
  1. Display with Pride: Once your Paper Plate Ghost is complete, display it proudly in your home. You can even hang it on a window for a ghoulishly delightful Halloween decoration! Attached a string or yarn on the back using some tape or use double sided tape to display on a window.

Whether you’re looking to add a touch of Halloween magic to your home or engage in a fun and educational craft, the Paper Plate Ghost is a perfect choice. This craft not only encourages creativity but also enhances fine motor skills and provides an opportunity for imaginative play. Set in the ultimate crafting space, Curious Crafting is a short form pre-school age series about the joy of making crafts. I lead a rotating cast of adorable little preschoolers (including my own) making magic out of common household objects.

In each episode we transform recycled items into magical crafts like a milk carton school bus, paper bag puppet or cotton pad turtle. The crafters learn and laugh their way through each activity while demonstrating what their young imaginations can create.

Curious Crafting shares the adventure and joy of making art with takeaway lessons for creating crafts at home.
