Learning to write is a long process that starts long before they ever hold a pencil. It is long but it doesn’t have to be boring! Here is a fun twist on a painting that makes a great pre-writing activity for toddlers and preschoolers.

Here’s what you’ll need to get started:

Supplies

• • Toy Plastic Cars
  • Washable Kid’s Paint
  • Kraft Paper or butcher paper
  • Marker
  • Masking Tape

 

Set Up

On a large piece of kraft or butcher paper write out all the letters of the alphabet. For younger toddlers you can do just a few letters.

I wrote out all the letters knowing that my three year old may or may not get to them all. But it gave her the chance to choose.

I wrote out the letters along the edge of the paper making it easier for her to reach. I also wanted the letters to look like a giant racetrack.

My three year old loves activities where she can add in pretend play. I created this track so that she could pretend that the cars were driving around each letter in order to finish the entire racetrack.

I added the paint directly to the kraft paper in the center of the letter track.

She then drove the cars through the paint and then rolled them along each letters.

Fun Activity

Although she did not get to all the letters she had a blast doing the ones that she got to. And in the end it gave some great pre-writing practice and me some much needed time to do some yard work!
