You won’t believe how we turned a simple day at the park into an educational adventure. The kids were fascinated by the different shapes and sizes of clouds drifting above us, and it sparked a brilliant idea: why not explore these fluffy wonders through a fun craft? So, that’s exactly what we did with our Learn About Clouds Craft!
Starting this project was all about capturing their natural curiosity. We talked about how clouds form and the various types, from the wispy cirrus to the big, fluffy cumulus that look like giant cotton balls. It was a perfect blend of learning and playing, which is always the sweet spot for keeping their attention. Armed with cotton, glue, and some blue paper, we set out to make our own cloud gallery.
The whole process was not just educational but also incredibly fun. As we crafted, the kids would look out the window and try to identify the clouds they were creating, comparing their fluffy cotton versions to the real thing in the sky. It’s amazing how a simple activity can open up a whole new world for them, and now, every time we’re outside, they’re pointing out different clouds and telling me all about them. If you’re looking for a craft that’s as educational as it is enjoyable, this cloud craft is a breeze to set up and a joy to do!
Learn About Clouds Craft for Kids

Material List:
- Cotton balls
- Blue cardstock
- Glue
- Marker (to write names of clouds like cirrus, stratus, and cumulus)
Directions:
- Cloud Base: Use the blue cardstock for your sky backdrop.
- Making Cloud Types:
- Cirrus: Take a few cotton balls and stretch them out thin and wispy pieces. Squeeze out glue in two long wavy lines at the top of the blue cardstock. Glue the wispy cotton pieces in the glue to represent cirrus clouds, which are high altitude clouds often indicating fair weather but can suggest a change in the weather is coming.

- Stratus: Spread out cotton thinly and flat near the middle of your cardstock to represent stratus clouds. You can also unroll your cotton if its structure allows. Squeeze out glue in the middle of the page in two long slightly less wavey lines. These clouds cover the sky like a blanket and are usually connected with overcast days and light rain.

- Cumulus: Use whole cotton balls or small clumps to make fluffy, piled-up shapes and glue them under the cirrus and stratus clouds. Squeeze out of the glue in three curly circles to make three cumulus clouds. Put glue on top of the pile of cotton balls and glue a few whole ball on top. Cumulus clouds often indicate fair weather but can grow into larger storm clouds.

Learning about Different Clouds
- Cirrus Clouds: Formed mostly from ice crystals, these are the highest clouds in the sky, found above 20,000 feet. Their presence suggests that a change in weather will occur within 24 hours.
- Stratus Clouds: These clouds are like sheets covering the sky and don’t usually lead to heavy rain, but can bring drizzle, snow, or sleet.
- Cumulus Clouds: These are the puffy, “cotton-like” clouds that can grow taller and turn into cumulonimbus clouds, which might bring thunderstorms.
