When I first received our rainbow building blocks from Jolly B for Kids I was very excited. They are beautifully made, bright and colourful. Definitely one of those toys that does not belong in a toy basket or chest but must be displayed!
Since they were incorporated into our toy room they have become a staple in many play ideas, from arches for trains to drive under to homes for fairies.
But they also make a great learning tool especially for learning colours.
You can use them in a thousand and one sorting activities from pom poms to caps. Recently my three year old has discovered my stash of craft gems.
She loves playing with them and incorporating them into her play. So when I said let’s do an activity using them and our rainbow building blocks she was very excited!
Here’s what you’ll need to get started:
Supplies
Set Up
Arrange your rainbow building blocks in a curved line as pictured.
Put all the gems into a pile. Pick out one and then ask your toddler and preschooler to put it in the matching rainbow arch.
My three year old turned this into a fun game. Where the gems were trying to find their friends (other similarly coloured gems) but had to ask all the other coloured gems where their friends were first.
This activity was a total hit. My three year old loves gems. They are shiny and sparkly and something we don’t play with everyday and the rainbow building blocks provided a unique way of sorting them.

I wish you could have heard the amount of talking this simple activity generated!
When doing sorting activities, find something that interests your toddler or preschooler. Whether it’s cars or pom poms and you will have them hooked.

Great fine motor skill activity.
This activity was so simple to set up, required no prep and entertained my three year old for such a long time. It was also a great activity to help practice fine motor skills.

This is so cute. I love those rainbow blocks. My boys are so into colors right now that this would be perfect. Using them with other toys to color sort is ingenious. Sorting is one of our favorite color activities.

What a smart way to practice the colors! And the rainbow is so pretty as just decor in the shelf 🙂

Thanks Mandisa. My 2 year old is crazy about colours and points them out EV-ER-Y-WHERE! This is definitely one to add to his playtime box.
