Here is a fun little STEM activity that is perfect for Thanksgiving. I set this up for my 6 year old and my twin toddlers.

Here how to set up Sink or Float Thanksgiving Dinner Activity

Fill your sensory bin with water. You will need to fill it with enough water so that you can see if the items of food sink to the bottom.

For older kids have them create a chart where they can write down their guesses as to whether a dinner item will sink or not. For each item I had my 6 year old write out the items and then under the guess column write whether she though the item would sink or float.

Sink of Float Food

Grab different food items or ingredients that you eat during your thanksgiving dinner. We choose some of our favorites, that were appropriate to put into water:

  • garlic
  • potatoes
  • tomatoes
  • carrots
  • peas
  • peppers
  • nuts
  • pumpkins
  • apples

Thanksgiving STEM Fun

This was such a fun activity for all my kids. We raided our fridge to find all the foods we typically eat during thanksgiving (and a few that we don’t but were curious about whether they would sink or float).

Before each food, I would ask them what their guess was: Would it sink or float? And then they tested their hypothesises like good little scientists for Thanksgiving.

Afterwards we talked about when something floated and why it sank!

My kids are 6 and 2.5 years old.
