Make snow volcanoes use baking soda and vinegar with your toddler or preschooler.

Getting outside in the winter can sometimes be a chore. All the hats, mitts, snow pants, jackets, boots and then oops now have to pee. Sometimes just looking for all the various things necessary for outdoor fun is so exhausting that I consider not going out at all.

If you have ever been there, I have a super fun activity that will make you glad that you did! Snow volcanoes! Create eruptions of color in the snow using baking soda and vinegar.

Honestly, we have done lots of baking soda and vinegar experiments in our house, but this one was super fun. Watching the color volcanoes erupt on the pristine white snow is absolutely worth the effort of getting outside!

Materials for Snow Volcanoes

  • Small plastic cups (x6 for the rainbow)
  • Dish soap
  • Water
  • Baking Soda
  • Food coloring or liquid watercolors
  • Vinegar
  • Squeeze bottle

How to Set Up Snow Volcanoes

  1. First, make mounts of snow. These will act as your volcanoes. Inside each mount place the plastic cup in the center top. Pack the snow around the cup so that when the reaction starts it flows down the mount just like a real volcano.
  2. Inside the cup add a squirt of dish soap and then water. You want to fill the water close up the top of the glass this will help make the eruption occur sooner when you add the vinegar.
  3. Next, add a couple spoonfuls of baking soda. The more you add the bigger the reaction you will get.
  4. Add the color. We used liquid watercolors this time but you can also use food coloring. Add a few drops of the different colors that you want to use to the cups. We decided to do the rainbow and added red, orange, yellow, green, blue and purple.
  1. Now it’s time for the reaction! Fill a squeeze bottle with vinegar. I would also keep the vinegar close by because you will likely need more as your child squeezes with delight. We went through a $5 jug of vinegar quite quickly.
  2. Start by adding the vinegar. Keep adding until the color volcanoes flow down the snowy volcano. Continue to the next color and keep going until the reaction is completely over.
  3. Can’t get enough? Checkout these other cool baking soda and vinegar experiments to do with your toddler or preschooler.

Set in the ultimate crafting space, Curious Crafting is a short form pre-school age series about the joy of making crafts. I lead a rotating cast of adorable little preschoolers (including my own) making magic out of common household objects.

In each episode we transform recycled items into magical crafts like a milk carton school bus, paper bag puppet or cotton pad turtle. The crafters learn and laugh their way through each activity while demonstrating what their young imaginations can create.

Curious Crafting shares the adventure and joy of making art with takeaway lessons for creating crafts at home.
