Snowflake Letter Hunt for Preschoolers

Snowflake letter hunt is one of those activities that feel like play first and learning second—which is exactly what preschoolers need. This snowflake letter hunt is hands-on, a little messy in the best way, and keeps kids moving while they practice letter recognition. It’s perfect for winter days when attention spans are short and sitting still just isn’t happening.

What I love about this activity is how naturally it combines movement, visual scanning, and art. Kids aren’t being asked to “find the letter S.” They’re hunting for snowflakes, stamping paint, and accidentally learning along the way. The repetition feels fun instead of forced, and the whole thing turns into a big, collaborative winter scene.

Materials

  • Toilet paper tube
  • Scissors
  • Paper plate
  • White paint
  • Large sheet of kraft paper or butcher paper
  • White paint marker
  • Painter’s tape

Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. Prep your workspace. Tape the large sheet of kraft or butcher paper to the floor or table using painter’s tape. Make sure it’s secure—this one involves lots of movement.
  2. Create the snow cloud. Using a white paint marker, draw a large cloud shape at the top of the paper. Write the letter S inside the cloud. Ensure there is enough room around each letter to allow for stamping without overlapping another letter.
  3. Add the letter hunt area. Under the cloud, write a mix of random letters across the page. Be sure to include both uppercase S and lowercase sscattered throughout.
  1. Make the snowflake stamp. Cut small vertical slits all around the bottom edge of the toilet paper tube. Gently press the cuts outward so the tube spreads into a star or snowflake shape.
  2. Set up the paint. Pour white paint onto a paper plate and spread it out slightly for easy dipping.
  3. Start the letter hunt. Dip the snowflake tube into the paint, then scan the paper to find the letter S or s.
  4. Stamp to mark the letters. Each time your child finds an S, stamp a snowflake around it using the tube. Keep going until all the S letters are “found.”

This snowflake letter hunt works beautifully for preschoolers and can easily be adapted to other letters or even numbers. It’s active, creative, and exactly the kind of winter learning that doesn’t feel like a worksheet.

Set in the ultimate crafting space, Curious Crafting is a short form pre-school age series about the joy of making crafts. I lead a rotating cast of adorable little preschoolers (including my own) making magic out of common household objects.

In each episode we transform recycled items into magical crafts like a milk carton school bus, paper bag puppet or cotton pad turtle. The crafters learn and laugh their way through each activity while demonstrating what their young imaginations can create.

Curious Crafting shares the adventure and joy of making art with takeaway lessons for creating crafts at home.

This show designed for toddlers and preschoolers 2.5 years old and up.
