Winter Letter Surprise Activity for Preschoolers
This winter letter surprise activity is one of my favorite ways to practice letters without pulling out flashcards or worksheets. This activity feels more like a little winter art surprise than literacy work, which is exactly why preschoolers stay engaged. The magic reveal element keeps kids curious, and the letter practice happens almost by accident.
This winter letter hunt uses a simple crayon-resist technique, which is always a hit. Kids love watching the letters “appear” as they paint, and it naturally slows them down in a really calm, focused way. It works beautifully for letter recognition, name letters, or even just one focus letter for the week.
Materials
- Winter template (snowmen, hats, mittens, or gloves)
- White crayon
- Watercolors
- Paintbrush
- Water
- Watercolor paper
How to Set Up
- Print the templates. Print the winter templates onto watercolor paper. Regular printer paper works in a pinch, but watercolor paper gives the best results and prevents warping.
- Hide the letters. Use a white crayon to write the letters you want your preschooler to work on inside the winter objects. Write them inside the snowmen, hats, or mittens so they’re completely hidden on the page.
- Invite your child to paint. Set out watercolors and a paintbrush. Encourage your preschooler to paint over the winter pictures using any colors they choose.
- Reveal the letters. As they paint, the white crayon letters will magically appear. Pause and name the letters together as they’re revealed.
- Extend the learning. Have your child circle their favorite letter, trace it with a finger, or say the letter sound once it appears.
This winter letter hunt is low-prep, calming, and easy to adapt. Change the focus letters, spell your child’s name, or use uppercase and lowercase together. It’s a cozy winter learning activity that feels more like art than school—and those are always the best ones.
