This snowflake post-it note counting activity is such a cozy way to practice early math during the winter months. What I love about this activity is how visual it is. Preschoolers can see the groups of snowflakes instead of trying to imagine numbers in their heads. It also naturally slows them down—counting one flake at a time—while still feeling playful and open-ended.
Materials
- Butcher paper
- White paint marker
- Painter’s tape
- Black marker
- Scissors
- Post-it notes
How to Set Up
- Prep the surface.T ape a large piece of butcher paper to the table or floor using painter’s tape. This keeps everything in place and gives you plenty of room to spread out.
- Draw the snowflake groups. Using a white paint marker, draw small snowflakes (or simple star shapes) in groups across the paper. Vary the quantities in each group—start small with numbers like 1–5, or go higher depending on your child.
- Create the number clouds. Cut Post-it notes in half. Draw a simple cloud shape on each one using a white paint marker, then write a number inside each cloud to match the snowflake groups you drew.
- Invite your preschooler to count. Ask your child to count the snowflakes in one group, touching each flake as they go.
- Match the number. Once they’ve counted, have them find the Post-it cloud with the matching number and place it over the flurry of snowflakes.
Easy Variations
- Use both numerals and dot patterns on the clouds
- Mix up the groups after matching and count again
- Add more snowflakes as confidence grows
This snowflake counting activity builds number sense, one-to-one correspondence, and confidence—all wrapped up in a playful winter theme.
