Winter has a way of stretching afternoons loooong—especially when it’s too cold to play outside and screens start calling everyone’s name. That’s where LEGO always saves the day. Winter LEGO building ideas are one of my favorite ways to keep kids busy, creative, and happily focused without turning on a tablet. A bin of bricks, a cozy table spot, and a simple prompt can easily turn into an hour of deep play.

LEGO works for all ages, which is part of the magic. Toddlers stack and explore, preschoolers build with intention, and older kids plan, redesign, and problem-solve. Everyone’s engaged, and no one’s asking for batteries.

Why LEGO Is a Winter Win

Here are three big reasons LEGO is such a go-to during the winter months:

  • Screen-free focus: LEGO naturally pulls kids into hands-on play and keeps them there.
  • Problem-solving skills: Kids plan, test, adjust, and rebuild—real learning without feeling like work.
  • Open-ended creativity: There’s no “right” way to build, which keeps frustration low and confidence high.

Winter LEGO Building Ideas to Try

These LEGO building ideas are about giving you or your child all the instructions they are about giving you some inspiration to go out and create your own LEGO winter creatures and objects. The only thing holding you and your child back are you imaginations and the amount of LEGO that you have!

LEGO Penguin

Penguins are a winter classic and surprisingly fun to design. Kids can experiment with black-and-white patterns, add flippers, or even build a whole penguin family sliding on ice. The idea to make something that a passer by would obviously say, yes that is a penguin. Perfection isn’t the game here and you get to use any LEGO pieces you like. The only constraint is color!

LEGO Polar Bear

A polar bear build is great for exploring shape and balance. Challenge kids to make it stand, sit, or even fish from a LEGO “ice hole.” You can even add a scarf or hat to your polar bear like we did. Again the only constraint in this challenge is color.

LEGO Winter Tree

Winter trees spark creativity with bare branches, snow-covered tips, or tiny birds perched on top. White bricks or clear pieces add a frosty touch. If you have tree LEGO pieces use them, if not then go on a hunt for all the brown or tan LEGO pieces you can find!

LEGO Arctic Fox

This one is always a hit. Similar to a polar bear, but shorter and with pointer ears. Look for all those white LEGO bricks and don’t forgot eye pieces.

More Winter LEGO Ideas

  • Igloos and ice caves
  • Sleds and snowmobiles
  • Winter villages or cabins
  • Skiers and snowboarders on ramps
  • Frozen lakes with skating scenes
  • Snowplow

Winter LEGO building is low-prep, endlessly reusable, and perfect for mixed ages. Set out a few winter-themed prompts and let kids take it from there—because boredom doesn’t stand a chance when LEGO is involved.

TV Show: Curious Crafting

I’m so excited to share my crafting TV show Curious Crafting which launched in July 2022 on TVOkids and TVOkids YouTube! Season 2 aired in August 2023! My show was also nominated in 2023 for Best Live Action Preschool Series by the Youth Media Alliance Awards of Excellence.

Curious Crafting Season 1 is also now airing in Australia on ABC! Watch it here!

Set in the ultimate crafting space, Curious Crafting is a short form pre-school age series about the joy of making crafts. I lead a rotating cast of adorable little preschoolers (including my own) making magic out of common household objects.

In each episode we transform recycled items into magical crafts like a milk carton school bus, paper bag puppet or cotton pad turtle. The crafters learn and laugh their way through each activity while demonstrating what their young imaginations can create.

Curious Crafting shares the adventure and joy of making art with takeaway lessons for creating crafts at home.

This show designed for toddlers and preschoolers 2.5 years old and up.
