Snowman milk experiment for toddlers, preschoolers and older kids.

This snowman milk experiment is a simple to set up classic kitchen science experiment that uses items that you likely already have handy in your kitchen. It looks almost too easy… until your kids see the color start racing around like it’s alive.

This experiment is basically the winter version of magic milk, but the snowman cookie cutter makes it feel extra special and themed without adding any extra work.

It’s perfect for a snowy afternoon, a classroom winter center, or one of those days when you want something fun that doesn’t require crafting supplies all over the table.

The best part is how flexible it is—keep it simple with one color for little kids, or add extra drops and let older siblings experiment with patterns, color mixing, and “what happens if we touch here instead?”

Materials

  • Shallow tray (or plate with a rim)
  • Snowman cookie cutter
  • Milk (whole milk works best)
  • Blue food coloring
  • Small dish for the dish soap
  • Dish soap
  • Q-tip

How to Set Up Snowman Milk Experiment

  1. Place the snowman cookie cutter in the shallow tray.
  2. Pour in enough milk to cover the bottom of the tray (and fill the snowman shape).
  1. Add a few drops of blue food coloring into the milk around the snowman. This way the snowman will stay white (at least for a while) while the snow storm “rages” around him!
  2. Dip a q-tip into dish soap (just the tip needs soap).
  3. Touch the soapy q-tip gently to the milk and watch the color burst and swirl around the snowman like a magical snowstorm.

This snowman milk experiment is fast, mesmerizing, and totally repeatable—aka the perfect winter science moment for kids.

Science Behind the Snowman Milk Experiment

When you add dish soap to the milk, it starts to break apart the fat in the milk.

The food coloring moves because the soap is pushing the fat around, and the colors go along for the ride.

That’s why the milk suddenly looks like it’s dancing and swirling—it’s the soap and milk reacting to each other.

TV Show: Curious Crafting

I’m so excited to share my crafting TV show Curious Crafting which launched in July 2022 on TVOkids and TVOkids YouTube! Season 2 aired in August 2023! My show was also nominated in 2023 for Best Live Action Preschool Series by the Youth Media Alliance Awards of Excellence.

Curious Crafting Season 1 is also now airing in Australia on ABC! Watch it here!

Set in the ultimate crafting space, Curious Crafting is a short form pre-school age series about the joy of making crafts. I lead a rotating cast of adorable little preschoolers (including my own) making magic out of common household objects.

In each episode we transform recycled items into magical crafts like a milk carton school bus, paper bag puppet or cotton pad turtle. The crafters learn and laugh their way through each activity while demonstrating what their young imaginations can create.

Curious Crafting shares the adventure and joy of making art with takeaway lessons for creating crafts at home.

This show designed for toddlers and preschoolers 2.5 years old and up.
