Ever dreamed of hosting a tea party beneath the golden embrace of sunflowers? While we might not be in the sprawling sunflower fields of Tuscany, we’ve got the next best thing! Introducing the Sunflower Tea Party Sensory Bin. It’s a radiant blend of play, education, and a whole lot of sunshiny goodness.

What You’ll Need:

  • Sunflowers: Ideally, get hold of the garden-variety (hehe, see what I did there?) that have a bunch of seeds. I generally use faded flowers.
  • Water: Enough to make your tea, of course!
  • Yellow Food Coloring: For that sun-kissed tea effect.
  • Plastic Tea Set: Because what’s a tea party without the tea set?
  • Tools for Tiny Hands: Tongs, tweezers, or even small spoons. These will be your child’s instruments to carefully pick apart the sunflower seeds and petals.
  • Small jug or yogurt container

Setting up the Sensory Tea Party

Tea Preparation: Fill a small jug or yogurt container with water and add a few drops of yellow food coloring. Stir well until you achieve that golden hue.

Setting the Scene: Place the faded sunflowers inside, letting them float and bob around. It should start looking like the sunflowers are enjoying a lovely bath.

Tea Set: Lay out your plastic tea set around the bin. Teacups, saucers, teapots, the whole shebang!

Ready the Tools: Place the tongs, tweezers, and any other tools you have next to the bin.

Engaging in Play

Tea Time! Let your kiddo pretend to brew or make the sunflower tea in the yellow water. Pour the sunflower-infused tea into the cups. Using the tools, they can pluck sunflower seeds and petals and add them to their brew. The fine motor skills needed to navigate the tongs or tweezers to pluck seeds? That’s child’s play turned into a skill booster!

Sunflower Study: While they play, chat about sunflowers. How do they grow? Why do they face the sun? These tidbits make for great tea-time conversations.

Mess Control: The fun is in the mess, but it’s also in knowing how to control it. Using tools can limit the water splashing about, and having a tray beneath the bin can help too!

Skills Alert

When children dive into sensory play like this, they’re not just having a blast (though that’s a significant part of it). They’re learning! Here’s a sneak peek:

  • Fine Motor Skills: Grasping those seeds with tongs or tweezers? That’s hand-eye coordination right there!
  • Imaginative Play: Pretending to host a tea party, coming up with stories about sunflowers – that’s the imagination running wild.
  • Scientific Inquiry: Observing how sunflower seeds float or sink, or why petals spread out in water, sparks those little scientific minds.

A Little Note

Please remind your kiddo that while the sunflower tea looks delightful, it’s for pretend play only. No sipping allowed! Safety first, always.

Wrap Up

Who knew hosting a sunflower tea party could be so much fun and educational at the same time? So, the next sunny day, lay out your sensory bin and let the adventures begin. Cheers to blooming fun!

Set in the ultimate crafting space, Curious Crafting is a short form pre-school age series about the joy of making crafts. I lead a rotating cast of adorable little preschoolers (including my own) making magic out of common household objects.

In each episode we transform recycled items into magical crafts like a milk carton school bus, paper bag puppet or cotton pad turtle. The crafters learn and laugh their way through each activity while demonstrating what their young imaginations can create.

Curious Crafting shares the adventure and joy of making art with takeaway lessons for creating crafts at home.

This show designed for toddlers and preschoolers 2.5 years old and up.
