Thanksgiving is all about gratitude and family, but it’s also the perfect time to engage kids in fun, hands-on activities that celebrate the season. A Thanksgiving sensory bin is a fantastic way to capture the textures, colors, and themes of fall while keeping little hands and minds busy. When I set this up for my kids, they were immediately drawn to the bright colors, unique items, and the satisfying feel of scooping and sorting. It’s an activity that invites open-ended play and sparks creativity.
What I love most about sensory bins is how versatile they are. They’re great for toddlers, preschoolers, and even older kids who want to explore textures, practice fine motor skills, or just enjoy some quiet play. This Thanksgiving sensory bin brings a festive touch to your home and provides kids with a fun way to explore fall elements like pumpkins, acorns, and leaves in a contained (and less messy) way.

Why You’ll Love This Thanksgiving Sensory Bin
This activity is simple to set up and offers hours of entertainment. It’s a hands-on way to celebrate Thanksgiving while also promoting sensory exploration, fine motor skills, and imaginative play. The best part is that it’s easy to customize. Don’t have pinecones? Swap them for something else, like dried pasta or more leaves. Sensory bins are all about using what you have and creating a fun, engaging space for your child to explore.
Materials You’ll Need
- A large sensory bin or shallow plastic tub
- Dried corn kernels
- Lima beans
- Fake pumpkins and gourds
- Artificial leaves
- Acorns (real or plastic)
- Bowls
- Scoopers (measuring cups, spoons, or small ladles work great)
- Pinecones
Step-by-Step Instructions for Setting Up Thanksgiving Sensory Bins
1. Prepare Your Thanksgiving Sensory Bin
Start by selecting a bin or tub that’s large enough for your child to explore comfortably. Place it on a flat surface with plenty of room around it for play. You might want to put a mat or towel underneath to catch any stray kernels or beans.

2. Create the Base Layer
Pour the dried corn kernels and lima beans into the bottom of the bin to create a colorful, textured base. Spread them out evenly so they cover the bottom of the bin.

3. Add the Larger Items
Place the fake pumpkins, gourds, pinecones, and acorns throughout the bin. Arrange them in a way that looks inviting but leaves plenty of room for digging and scooping.

4. Include Tools for Play
Add bowls, scoopers, and any other tools your child might enjoy using. Measuring cups and spoons are great for scooping, sorting, and transferring. I also like to add small animals for my kids interact with. If you child likes cars, you can add those instead.

5. Add Final Touches
Scatter artificial leaves on top to complete the fall look. You can also sprinkle in a few extra beans or kernels for added texture.
How They Played
When my kids saw the sensory bin, they couldn’t wait to dive in. They started by scooping and pouring the corn kernels and beans into bowls, testing different tools to see which ones worked best. Soon, they were sorting items—putting all the pinecones in one bowl and all the pumpkins in another. They even created little pretend scenes with the pumpkins and acorns, like a mini Thanksgiving feast.
What’s great about this sensory bin is how adaptable it is. Younger kids might simply enjoy the textures and scooping, while older kids might use it for pretend play or even counting and sorting games. It’s also a calming activity that allows
