Toothpick Heart Pull is a fun and easy Valentine’s Day fine motor activity for kids to try. It makes a great quiet time activity for preschoolers and kindergartners (3-5 year olds).

How to Make a Toothpick Heart

Toothpick Heart Pull: Valentine's Day Fine Motor Activity

If you have large piece of foam use that to create this activity but if you don’t you can easily create it using cardboard.

Build Your Heart

  1. Cut out the shape of a heart from cardboard or from foam. If you are using cardboard cut out 2 or 3 hearts of the same size and stack them on top of each other and glue them together.
  2. Once they are glue together you can color different sections with different colours. I used green, yellow and red but you can easily use pink, red and purple or any other colour. Colour the heart in blocks or add smaller hearts within the larger one.

Colour The Toothpicks

To colour your toothpicks, fill a bowl with a small amount of water just enough to cover the toothpicks and add several drops of food colouring. Toss in your toothpicks and let them soak. The longer they soak the more vibrant the colour. Leave them in overnight for the best results. But if you are short on time let them soak for at least an hour. Let them dry on a sheet of parchment paper. Save your toothpicks when they’re done with this activity. You can reuse them with other activities.

Make sure to match the colour of the toothpicks with the color of your heart.

  1. Stick your toothpicks into the foam or cardboard heart by colour.
  2. Invite your toddler or preschooler or kindergartener to use tongs or their fingers to remove the toothpicks. Have them sort them on similar coloured bowls or sheets of construction paper.
  3. When they are done have them replace them into the heart according to the correct colour.
