Supplies

Before we get started with baking sheet printing, gather these supplies:

  • Baking sheet (preferably one with a shallow rim)
  • Non-toxic washable paints (various colors for a splash of fun)
  • White paper (cut into suitable printing sizes)
  • Soft-bristled paint brushes or sponge brushes
  • Optional: Markers or crayons for adding details after printing

Creating Beautiful Imprints

To begin the baking sheet printing fun, have your kids paint the bottom of the baking sheet with their favorite colors. They can use paint brushes or sponge brushes to create vibrant backgrounds. Cover the entire baking sheet. You can use one colour or multiple colours. Try to use colours that are close to each other in the rainbow so that if they mix they don’t make gray or brown.

Encourage them to draw different things like ladybugs, flowers, ice creams, or any other objects they fancy, using their fingers to make imprints directly onto the paint. The magic happens when they take a sheet of white paper and gently press it into the painted baking sheet, creating an artful imprint!

Unveiling the Prints

Carefully peel the white paper back, the imprints of their colorful drawings will be revealed, just like magic! Each print will be a unique masterpiece, showcasing their creativity and artistic flair. Be sure to create more than one imprint with each painted baking sheet.

Let them experiment with different colors and designs, combining various imprints on one paper for a collage-like effect. The process of gently pressing the paper onto the baking sheet also adds a tactile element to the art activity, engaging their senses in a delightful way.

Baking sheet printing is a marvelous way for kids to explore their creativity and create stunning art imprints without the need for complicated tools or materials. The process of painting, drawing, and printing offers a multi-layered sensory experience that sparks imagination and joy. Whether they’re designing ladybugs, flowers, or ice creams, each imprint is a unique expression of their creativity. So, get your baking sheets ready and watch as your little artists embark on a fun and artful journey of baking sheet printing. Prepare to be amazed by their colorful imprints, and cherish the memories of this delightful adventure for years to come! Happy printing!

What is Printmaking?

Printmaking is a fascinating art process that lets kids explore the world of creativity in a unique and captivating way. In this technique, young artists create artwork by transferring images or designs onto paper or other surfaces through various printing methods. Whether it’s carving intricate patterns on a linoleum block for relief printing, crafting imaginative designs on foam sheets for foam printing, or experimenting with everyday objects for monoprinting, printmaking offers a world of possibilities. With each press and transfer, kids witness the magic of their creations come to life, giving birth to multiple unique prints. This hands-on and exciting art process encourages children to experiment, express themselves, and discover the joy of artistic exploration through the art of printmaking.

TV Show: Curious Crafting

I’m so excited to share my crafting TV show Curious Crafting which launched in July 2022 on TVOkids and TVOkids YouTube! Season 2 airs in the summer of 2023! We were also nominated in 2023 for Best Live Action Preschool Series by the Youth Media Alliance Awards of Excellence.

Set in the ultimate crafting space, Curious Crafting is a short form pre-school age series about the joy of making crafts. I lead a rotating cast of adorable little preschoolers (including my own) making magic out of common household objects.

In each episode we transform recycled items into magical crafts like a milk carton school bus, paper bag puppet or cotton pad turtle. The crafters learn and laugh their way through each activity while demonstrating what their young imaginations can create.

Curious Crafting shares the adventure and joy of making art with takeaway lessons for creating crafts at home.

This show designed for toddlers and preschoolers 2.5 years old and up.
