Make beautiful snowflakes using coffee filters.

If you’re looking for an easy winter STEM activity for kids that doubles as a cute craft, coffee filter snowflakes are such a good go-to. They’re inexpensive, low-prep, and somehow still feel exciting every single time you open one up and see the pattern.
Plus, this is one of those activities that works for a wide age range: toddlers can experiment with folding and snipping (with help), preschoolers can start making their own designs, and older kids can get super detailed with symmetry.
And yes, this counts as STEM. Cutting snowflakes builds early math skills like symmetry, patterns, shapes, and spatial awareness. Then we add washable markers and a spray bottle to turn it into a mini science moment too—kids get to watch how water moves through paper fibers and blends colors as it spreads. It’s art, math, and science all in one, and the setup is honestly refreshingly easy.
Why You’ll Love This Coffee Filter Snowflake Craft
- Super affordable (coffee filters are basically craft gold)
- Easy winter activity for home, classroom, or daycare
- Builds fine motor skills with folding and cutting
- Sneaks in early math: symmetry, shapes, and patterns
- Spray bottle step adds a fun science + sensory element
- Great for decorating windows, walls, or winter bulletin boards

Materials
- White coffee filters
- Washable markers
- Spray bottle filled with water
- Tray (baking sheet or plastic tray)
- Scissors
Optional: tape or string for hanging finished snowflakes
Step-by-Step: How to Make Coffee Filter Snowflakes

1) Set up a simple work area
Put a tray on the table to catch marker ink and water spray. Coffee filters can get very wet during this activity, so the tray keeps things neat and makes it easier to move the snowflakes somewhere safe to dry.
2) Decorate the coffee filter
Lay one coffee filter flat on the tray. Let kids color directly on it using washable markers. Encourage them to add dots, lines, zigzags, or little blocks of color instead of filling the whole thing solid—this creates more interesting patterns when the water spreads.
Tip: If you want a more “wintery” look, suggest blues and purples. If your kids love bright colors, go with it. Snowflakes in rainbow colors are still snowflakes.
3) Spray with water (the science part)
Lightly spritz the coffee filter with water using the spray bottle. Start with just a few sprays, then pause and watch what happens. The marker ink will begin to bleed and blend as the water travels through the coffee filter.
Let kids observe and describe what they see:
- Which colors spread the fastest?
- What happens when you spray more water?
- Do the colors mix into new ones?
This is a great time to casually mention that the coffee filter is absorbent and the water is carrying the ink through the tiny fibers in the paper.
4) Let it dry
Carefully leave the coffee filter flat on the tray to dry. If it’s very wet, you can gently transfer it to a dry tray or a paper towel underneath. Drying can take anywhere from 20 minutes to an hour depending on how much water you sprayed.
If you want to speed it up, place it near a sunny window or use a fan nearby.
5) Fold the coffee filter for cutting
Once the coffee filter is fully dry, it’s time to turn it into a snowflake. Flatten it first, then fold it in half to make a half circle. Fold it in half again, and then one more time if your child can manage it. The more folds, the more detailed the snowflake ends up—but even two folds can make a great result.

6) Cut out snowflake shapes
Using scissors, cut small shapes along the edges of the folded filter—triangles, tiny half circles, little notches, or diagonal snips. Remind kids not to cut straight across the whole filter, or it will fall into pieces.
For younger kids: you can draw a few simple cut lines for them to follow, or help with the folding and let them snip.

7) Open and reveal your snowflake
This part never gets old. Unfold the coffee filter slowly and flatten it out to reveal the snowflake pattern. Talk about symmetry by pointing out how the design repeats around the circle. Ask kids to spot “matching” shapes on different sides.
8) Display it
Tape the snowflakes to windows, hang them from string, or use them as winter placemats for snack time. They also look really cute layered on a bulletin board.
Easy Extensions (If You Want More STEM)
- Snowflake symmetry chat: Fold a finished snowflake in half and see if both sides match.
- Spray test: Make two filters—one lightly sprayed, one soaked—and compare how the colors look.
- Pattern challenge: Ask kids to create a “dot-dot-line” pattern before spraying.
Coffee filter snowflakes are the kind of winter activity you can pull out anytime you need something quick, calming, and actually educational—without it feeling like school.
