When winter hits and you need an activity that isn’t messy, isn’t loud, and doesn’t require you to prep a million supplies, this LEGO snowflake activity is such a solid win. It’s basically a mini building challenge that feels like play (because it is), but it sneaks in a bunch of early learning too—symmetry, patterns, problem-solving, and that satisfying “I made this!” confidence boost.
The best part is you can do it with regular LEGO or LEGO DUPLO (DUPLO is perfect for toddlers and preschoolers). We use painter’s tape to create a snowflake “map” on the floor or table, and kids build right on top. It’s simple, open-ended, and easy to repeat with different designs all winter long.
Why You’ll Love This LEGO Snowflake Activity
- No mess, no special tools, no printing
- Great for winter days at home, preschool, or daycare
- Builds early math skills like symmetry and patterning
- Encourages problem-solving and spatial awareness
- Easy to adjust for toddlers, preschoolers, and big kids

Materials
- Painter’s tape
- LEGO DUPLO (or LEGO bricks)
Optional: white/blue bricks if you have them, but any colors work
Step-by-Step: How to Set Up a LEGO Snowflake

1) Pick your building spot
Choose a flat surface: the floor, a low table, or even a big piece of cardboard if you want to move it later. Painter’s tape usually peels up easily, but it’s always smart to test a small piece first if you’re taping on delicate surfaces.
2) Make a simple snowflake “skeleton” with tape
Start with one long strip of painter’s tape going straight up and down—this is your snowflake’s main line. Add a second long strip across the middle to make a plus sign.
Now turn that plus sign into a snowflake by adding two diagonal lines across the center (like an X). When you’re done, you should have six “arms” coming out from the middle, like a classic snowflake.
Tip: Keep the tape lines evenly spaced. It doesn’t have to be perfect, but the more balanced it is, the easier it is for kids to build a symmetrical design.
3) Add little branches (optional, but fun)
If you have time, add short tape strips branching off each arm—like tiny V shapes or short dashes near the ends. This gives kids more “building cues” and makes the snowflake design feel more real.
For toddlers, you might skip the extra branches and keep it simple.
4) Invite kids to build right on the tape lines
Put a pile of LEGO DUPLO nearby and say something like: “Let’s build a snowflake that matches the tape.” Kids can line bricks along each tape arm, starting at the center and working outward.
Encourage them to build one arm first, then copy it on the next arm. That “copy and repeat” is where the early math skill-building happens.
5) Add a symmetry challenge (easy version)
Once they’ve built one side, ask:
- “Can you make the other side match?”
- “What piece did you use here—can you find the same one?”
- “How many blocks long is that arm?”
If your child is young, just naming what they’re doing counts as learning. If they’re older, they can measure arms by counting studs or blocks.

6) Keep playing with variations
When they’re done, peel up the tape and make a new snowflake layout—or keep the tape down and build different snowflakes on the same template. You can also challenge kids to:
- Make a “tiny snowflake” using fewer bricks
- Build the “biggest snowflake possible”
- Create a repeating color pattern on each arm
