This activity not only keeps kids engaged but also adds an extra layer of excitement to the traditional egg coloring. It’s a delightful twist on Easter creativity that allows children to explore colors in a magically revealing way. Imagine the joy as they brush water over their designs to uncover the vibrant hues hidden beneath. It’s an ideal project for a spring afternoon, combining the spirit of Easter with the wonder of color science.

Materials:

  • Paper towels (2 connected sheets or 4 smaller ones)
  • Black permanent marker
  • Washable markers in assorted colors
  • Tray (to catch any spills)
  • Bowl with water
  • Paintbrush

Step-by-Step Instructions:

  1. Prepare Your Paper Towels: Take two connected sheets of paper towel (or four if they’re the smaller variety) to create a thicker surface for your artwork.
  1. Draw the Easter Egg: Using a black permanent marker on the top sheet of paper towel, draw a large Easter egg shape. Fill it with various designs such as stripes, dots, and zigzags. Press firmly to ensure the design slightly imprints onto the second sheet.
  1. Add Color to the Second Sheet: On the second sheet, fill in the designs with washable markers, using bright and bold colors for a more dramatic effect when revealed.
  1. Reassemble and Prepare for the Reveal: Carefully lay the top sheet back over the colored bottom sheet. Place this prepared “egg” on a tray to keep your workspace clean.
  1. Water Painting Magic: Fill a bowl with water and provide a paintbrush. Invite your child to gently brush water over the top sheet. As the water soaks through, it will reveal the stunning colors hidden below.

How They Played:

Children were thrilled with the magic-like reveal of colors as they painted the paper towel with water. They experimented with different brush strokes, noticing how the colors blended and spread. Some kids made predictions about how the final egg would look, while others were delighted by the unexpected outcomes. The activity not only sparked creativity but also opened up discussions about color mixing and patterns.

Tips for Success:

  • Use a generous amount of color with the washable markers for a vivid reveal.
  • Encourage light brush strokes to prevent the paper towel from tearing.
  • Place a waterproof mat under the tray for an easier cleanup process.
  • Let children explore with different designs and color combinations for each egg.

Skills Learned:

This Color Reveal Easter Egg craft offers more than just a fun activity; it’s a learning opportunity. Children enhance their:

  • Fine Motor Skills: Through drawing and painting, kids develop hand-eye coordination and dexterity.
  • Creativity and Imagination: Designing their own Easter eggs allows for creative expression and imaginative play.
  • Science Exploration: This activity introduces basic concepts of color theory and materials science, as they see how water interacts with paper and ink.
  • Patience and Anticipation: Waiting for the colors to reveal teaches children patience and heightens their sense of anticipation and surprise.

Set in the ultimate crafting space, Curious Crafting is a short form pre-school age series about the joy of making crafts. I lead a rotating cast of adorable little preschoolers (including my own) making magic out of common household objects.

In each episode we transform recycled items into magical crafts like a milk carton school bus, paper bag puppet or cotton pad turtle. The crafters learn and laugh their way through each activity while demonstrating what their young imaginations can create.

Curious Crafting shares the adventure and joy of making art with takeaway lessons for creating crafts at home.
