Black History Month is a fantastic time to explore and celebrate the achievements of African Americans who have made significant contributions to society and paved the way for future generations. This year, let’s shine a light on Dr. Mae Jemison, the first African American woman to travel in space. Our Dr. Mae Jemison Starry Night Craft is not only a fun and educational activity for kids but also a tribute to her remarkable journey and achievements. By combining art with history, this craft offers a unique opportunity for children to learn about space, perseverance, and dreaming big, all while engaging in a creative project.

Activity Overview

  • Age Suitability: This craft is good for toddlers aged children 2 years old and up with adult assistance.
  • Mess Level: The mess level for this craft is medium.
  • Difficulty to Create: Low.

Materials Needed

  • Black construction paper
  • Dr. Mae Jemison printable (available below)
  • Scissors
  • Glue
  • Sponges
  • White paint
  • Paper plate (for the paint)
  • Star sprinkles (or glitter)

Step by Step Instructions

  1. Prepare Your Materials: Gather all your materials for your Dr. Mae Jemison Starry Night Craft. Cut the sponges into smaller pieces if necessary, and set the white paint on the paper plate for easy paint access.
  1. Create the Background: Using the sponges, lightly dab white paint onto the black construction paper to create your starry night sky. Dip your sponge into the paint and then remove excess paint by printing it on the edge of the paper plate, and then on to the black construction paper. Encourage kids to think about the vastness of space and the beauty of the stars.
  1. Add the Stars: While the paint is still wet, sprinkle star sprinkles or glitter over the paper to add sparkle to your starry night. This step is sure to be a hit, so let the little ones go wild with the stars!
  1. Prepare Dr. Jemison: Cut out the Dr. Mae Jemison printable. This can be a great opportunity to talk about her life, her space mission, and her contributions to science.
  2. Assemble the Craft: Once the starry background is dry, glue the cutout of Dr. Jemison onto the construction paper. Position her so it looks like she’s exploring the star-filled sky.

Tips for Success

  • Cover your work surface with newspaper or a craft mat to keep it clean.
  • Use just enough paint on the sponges to create a soft, starry effect without soaking the paper.
  • For younger kids, pre-cut the Dr. Jemison printable and have the star sprinkles ready to go to keep their focus on the fun parts of the project.

Skills Learned

  • Creativity and Imagination: Designing their own starry night sky allows children to express themselves creatively.
  • Fine Motor Skills: Cutting, gluing, and sprinkling develop hand-eye coordination and precision.
  • Learning through Play: Discussing Dr. Mae Jemison’s achievements introduces children to space exploration and the importance of persistence and education in achieving one’s dreams.

This Dr. Mae Jemison Starry Night Craft is more than just a fun activity; it’s a learning experience that combines art, history, and science in one. It encourages kids to dream big and reach for the stars, all while celebrating an inspiring figure in Black history. So, let’s get crafting and inspire the next generation of explorers and dreamers!

TV Show: Curious Crafting

I’m so excited to share my crafting TV show Curious Crafting which launched in July 2022 on TVOkids and TVOkids YouTube! Season 2 aired in August 2023! My show was also nominated in 2023 for Best Live Action Preschool Series by the Youth Media Alliance Awards of Excellence.

Curious Crafting Season 1 is also now airing in Australia on ABC! Watch it here!

Set in the ultimate crafting space, Curious Crafting is a short form pre-school age series about the joy of making crafts. I lead a rotating cast of adorable little preschoolers (including my own) making magic out of common household objects.

In each episode we transform recycled items into magical crafts like a milk carton school bus, paper bag puppet or cotton pad turtle. The crafters learn and laugh their way through each activity while demonstrating what their young imaginations can create.

Curious Crafting shares the adventure and joy of making art with takeaway lessons for creating crafts at home.

This show designed for toddlers and preschoolers 2.5 years old and up.
