My kids love hands-on activities, and this Feed the Penguin Activity was a total hit. When I first introduced this game to my kids, they couldn’t wait to start “feeding” the penguin. The concept is simple: roll a die or draw a card, count the fish, and feed them to the hungry penguin. Not only is it fun, but it sneaks in a bit of counting practice too!

What’s great about this activity is how interactive it is. Kids stay engaged while practicing math skills, fine motor control, and even a little imaginative play. Plus, the penguin’s adorable design adds an extra layer of excitement to the game.

Why You’ll Love This Penguin Activity

This activity is fun, easy to set up, and adaptable for different ages. It’s perfect for little ones learning to count or older kids who want to work on their math skills in a playful way. Plus, the crafting element means kids get to help create their own penguin, making the game even more special.

Materials You’ll Need:

  • Small cardboard box
  • Black marker
  • Cotton balls
  • Construction paper (black and orange for the penguin, other colors for the fish)
  • Scissors
  • Glue
  • Playing cards or dice

How to Make the Feed the Penguin Activity

1. Create the Penguin Base

Draw the outline of a penguin on the front of the cardboard box using a black marker. Use scissors to cut out a diamond shape hole where the penguin’s mouth would be. This will be the opening for “feeding” the fish.

2. Decorate the Penguin

Glue cotton balls onto the penguin’s belly and face for a fluffy, textured look. Cut out black circles from construction paper for the eyes and glue them above the mouth hole. Cut two small triangles from orange construction paper for the beak and tape them upright on the top and bottom of the mouth hole to frame it.

3. Make the Fish

Use different colors of construction paper to cut out small fish shapes. You can make as many as you like for the game.

4. Set Up the Game

Invite your child to roll a die or pick a card from a deck. They’ll count out the matching number of fish and “feed” them into the penguin’s mouth. Continue until all the fish have been fed.

Modifications for Younger Kids

  1. Simplify Counting: Use numbers 1-3 on the dice or cards to keep the counting manageable for little ones still learning.
  2. Pre-Cut Fish Shapes: Prepare the fish ahead of time so younger kids can focus on feeding the penguin without the added cutting step.
  3. Color Matching: Instead of counting, ask kids to sort and feed the penguin fish of a specific color.

Modifications for Older Kids

  1. Math Challenges: Add basic addition or subtraction by rolling two dice and feeding the penguin the sum or difference of the numbers.
  2. Time Challenges: Use a timer to see how many fish they can feed the penguin within a set time.
  3. DIY Upgrades: Let older kids design and decorate their penguin and fish for a more personalized crafting experience.

This Feed the Penguin Activity is a fantastic mix of crafting, counting, and pretend play. It’s quick to set up, keeps kids entertained, and makes learning feel like a game. Perfect for a rainy day or a winter afternoon, this activity is bound to be a favorite!

TV Show: Curious Crafting

I’m so excited to share my crafting TV show Curious Crafting which launched in July 2022 on TVOkids and TVOkids YouTube! Season 2 aired in August 2023! My show was also nominated in 2023 for Best Live Action Preschool Series by the Youth Media Alliance Awards of Excellence.

Curious Crafting Season 1 is also now airing in Australia on ABC! Watch it here!

Set in the ultimate crafting space, Curious Crafting is a short form pre-school age series about the joy of making crafts. I lead a rotating cast of adorable little preschoolers (including my own) making magic out of common household objects.

In each episode we transform recycled items into magical crafts like a milk carton school bus, paper bag puppet or cotton pad turtle. The crafters learn and laugh their way through each activity while demonstrating what their young imaginations can create.

Curious Crafting shares the adventure and joy of making art with takeaway lessons for creating crafts at home.

This show designed for toddlers and preschoolers 2.5 years old and up.
