Looking for a fun and festive way to celebrate the Fourth of July, Canada Day, New Year’s, or any special occasion? Fireworks in a jar is the perfect activity!
It’s a simple yet mesmerizing project that brings the excitement of fireworks indoors, minus the noise and the hassle.
This colorful experiment is great for kids and adults alike, providing a visual treat that captures the spirit of celebration anytime you want to add a little magic to your day.
Why You’ll Love This Activity
You’ll love this activity because it’s easy to set up, uses simple household items, and provides a beautiful display that everyone can enjoy. It’s a fantastic way to engage kids in a hands-on science experiment that’s as educational as it is fun. Plus, it’s a safe alternative to real fireworks, making it ideal for young children or anyone who prefers a quieter celebration.

Supplies Needed
- Large mason jar
- Oil (any type will do, but vegetable oil works well)
- Food coloring (liquid, not gel)
- Warm water
- Fork

How to Make Fireworks in a Jar
- Fill the Jar: Start by filling a large mason jar about three-quarters full with warm water.
- Prepare the Oil and Food Coloring: In a separate bowl, add a few tablespoons of oil. Then, add several drops of different colors of food coloring to the oil. Use a fork to gently stir the mixture. This will break up the food coloring into smaller droplets.

- Combine and Watch: Slowly pour the oil and food coloring mixture into the jar of warm water. Watch as the food coloring droplets begin to sink through the oil and disperse into the water, creating a beautiful, fireworks-like display.

Tips
- Don’t Use Gel Food Coloring: Gel food coloring doesn’t disperse as well in oil and water, so stick with liquid food coloring for the best results.
- Break Up the Drops: Use a fork to mix the oil and food coloring gently. This helps break the food coloring into smaller drops, creating a more spectacular and vibrant fireworks effect.

The Science Behind Fireworks in a Jar
The magic of fireworks in a jar lies in the different densities and polarities of the liquids involved.
Oil and water don’t mix because they have different polarities; oil is non-polar while water is polar.

When you add food coloring to the oil, it doesn’t dissolve but forms tiny droplets. When this mixture is poured into the water, the food coloring droplets sink through the oil and then spread out as they hit the water, creating a beautiful display.
This simple yet fascinating experiment is a great way to introduce kids to basic scientific principles in a visually engaging way.
Fireworks in a jar is not just an activity; it’s an opportunity to explore and celebrate the wonders of science while creating a memorable and festive experience for any special occasion.
