Ice Skating Sight Word Activity

If winter reading practice is starting to feel a little stale, this Ice Skating Sight Word Activity is such a fun way to switch things up. It turns sight word practice into movement, play, and imagination — all while kids are still working on real literacy skills. Instead of sitting at a table with flashcards, kids get to “skate” their way around a pretend ice rink, spelling and reading words as they go.

This activity works especially well for preschoolers and early elementary kids who learn best when they can move, touch, and do. It’s also a great option for winter days when outdoor play is limited, but kids still need something engaging and hands-on. Best of all, it’s easy to customize for different skill levels, from simple letter recognition to spelling full sight words.

Why You’ll Love This Ice Skating Sight Word Activity

  • Combines movement with early reading practice
  • Keeps kids engaged longer than traditional worksheets
  • Supports letter recognition, spelling, and phonics
  • Easy to adapt for different ages and skill levels
  • Feels like play, not school

Materials

  • Butcher paper
  • Blue construction paper
  • Glue
  • Black marker
  • White paint marker (or white chalk marker)
  • Ice skating printable (linked below)
  • Hole punch

Optional: tape to secure the butcher paper to the floor or wall

Step-by-Step: How to Set Up the Ice Skating Sight Word Activity

1) Create the ice rink

Lay out a large piece of butcher paper on the floor or table. Cut an oval or circle shape from blue paper to represent the ice rink. Glue it directly onto the butcher paper, pressing firmly so it stays flat. This blue shape will be the “skating surface” where all the action happens.

If you want extra durability, you can tape the butcher paper down so it doesn’t slide during play.

2) Add letters around the rink

Using a black marker, write all the letters of the alphabet around the edge of the rink. Space them out evenly so kids can clearly see each letter. These letters act as visual cues and help reinforce letter recognition as kids move around the rink.

For younger kids, you can start with just a few letters or focus only on the letters used in your sight words.

3) Make your word cards

Cut small rectangles from blue paper to create word cards. On each card, write a sight word or spelling word your child is practicing. A fun twist is to link the words together: try to make the last letter of one word the starting letter of the next word.

For example:

  • even
  • next
  • tree

This encourages kids to pay attention to letter sounds and spelling patterns.

4) Print and prep the skate

Print out the ice skate printable. Cut it out and punch a hole near the top or side of the skate. This hole allows the skate to be moved easily across the rink using a finger or marker tip.

You can laminate the skate if you want to reuse it often, but that’s optional.

5) Place the words and get ready to skate

Lay the word cards just below the rink in a row. Choose one word to start. Explain to your child that the skate will “skate” across the rink, touching the letters needed to spell the word.

6) Skate and spell

Using a white marker, place the tip through the hole in the skate and gently slide it across the rink. As the skate passes each letter around the rink, say the letter out loud. Continue until the entire word is spelled.

Once the word is complete, move on to the next word, starting with its first letter. Encourage your child to say each letter and read the full word at the end.

Easy Modifications and Extensions

  • Letter recognition: Call out a letter and have kids skate to find it.
  • CVC words: Use simple three-letter words for early readers.
  • Name practice: Spell your child’s name or family members’ names.
  • Movement break: Have kids stand up and “skate” with their bodies between words.

Kids “skate” their way to spelling practice with this creative activity that combines movement and literacy learning.

TV Show: Curious Crafting

I’m so excited to share my crafting TV show Curious Crafting which launched in July 2022 on TVOkids and TVOkids YouTube! Season 2 aired in August 2023! My show was also nominated in 2023 for Best Live Action Preschool Series by the Youth Media Alliance Awards of Excellence.

Curious Crafting Season 1 is also now airing in Australia on ABC! Watch it here!

Set in the ultimate crafting space, Curious Crafting is a short form pre-school age series about the joy of making crafts. I lead a rotating cast of adorable little preschoolers (including my own) making magic out of common household objects.

In each episode we transform recycled items into magical crafts like a milk carton school bus, paper bag puppet or cotton pad turtle. The crafters learn and laugh their way through each activity while demonstrating what their young imaginations can create.

Curious Crafting shares the adventure and joy of making art with takeaway lessons for creating crafts at home.

This show designed for toddlers and preschoolers 2.5 years old and up.
